Pat Riley. In my opinion a case can be made for Phil Jackson, Red Auerback and Greg Popovich though. However I would personally pick Pat Riley. I know that Jackson and Auerbach won more rings then him, and that's why people are usually obsessed with these two coaches, but the fact is that Jax and Red coached way better teams than Riley or Pop overall. The Celtics were by far the more stacked team in the 60's and Phil coached the best player in the league three times (first Jordan, then Shaq and now Kobe). I would say that it helps to win rings... Don't get me wrong they are great coaches nonetheless and I definitely agree that a case can be made for them. But I pick Riley because Pat was able to be succesful with COMPLETELY different teams. First he was the coach of the most offensive team in the league (arguably in the history of the league) the showtime Lakers. As the Lakers head coach he made the Finals 6 times and won four rings in 9 years. Then Pat arrived in New York and, as he didn't have the same offensive talent as he had in LA, he focused on defense this time and the Knicks became the best defense in the league. Thanks to him the team became immediately better (the year before they had won 39 games and lost in the first round against the Bulls, 3-0), not only they won more than 50 games for the first time in five years but they almost beat the mighty Bulls in the ECF. It's one of the two times in the 90's that the Jordan's Bulls had to play 7 games to win a series since they started to win in 1991 (the other was in the 98 ECF against the Pacers). It has to be considered that it was a HUGE surprise at the time to see the Knicks giving that much trouble to Chicago, everyone was expecting the Bulls to destroy New York in 5 games at best. The next year they were even better and won 60 games for the first time since 1970 ! And they went to the ECF for the first time since the Bernard King days. The next year they made the Finals, for the first time since 73. Pat Riley did not win a ring with that team but he had a huge impact on them nonetheless, this thanks to his ability to adapt to a team that was completely different from the team that he coached and had success with before. It is more than admirable. It is important to precise that he did all this with only one true NBA star, Patrick Ewing. Pat Riley really showed us how great a coach he was. Then Riley arrived in Miami and became for the first time coach and GM. And he literally made this franchise. Before his arrival this team was nothing. Before Riley they had only made the playoffs twice and never passed the first round. Thanks to Riley they got back in the playoffs rightaway and made the playoffs 6 years in a row. They also went to the ECF for the first time. And then Riley eventually led them to the only ring that they ever won. And that is why I give the edge to Riley, cause he was able to have some success with different teams, teams that had all a TOTALLY different style of play. Riley can adapt to any kind of team, that is his main strenght. That is why that I hope that he will get back to coaching someday, truly a fantastic coach, and I have to say, my favorite coach of All Time. This said I can understand why everyone here picked Phil Jackson and have nothing whatsoever against this choice. It is really hard to assert for sure that one particular coach is the greatest coach of all time anyhow.2 points

After 4 games, the Heat are 3-1, with their only loss (opening night vs the Celtics) being the only game that was within double digits. By now we are starting to see this team come together a bit, with roles being defined, chemistry being built and certain tendencies showing up. Here are my thoughts on the team so far... -First and foremost, Z needs to start...Joel Anthony offers the starting lineup absolutely nothing. Anthony has no offensive skillset, the basketball just bounces off his tiny hands to the other team when LeBron or Wade find him underneath, he's a crappy rebounder, is undersized and consistently misses defensive rotations. His shot-blocking is nice, and he does have defensive range, but overall he looks like a mess out there. So far Z has been lights-out with his jumper, he offers the team the size they desperately need, he's a decent rebounder who can block the occasional shot, and most importantly he has terrific chemistry with LeBron. Through the first 4 games, I'd say the team's bread and butter play has been LeBron/Z pick and roll. They have impeccable timing, and Z is making teams pay when they leave him to trap LeBron. Chemistry, size and having a guy who can prevent the Heat from playing 4-on-5 on offense should make his promotion to the starting 5 a no-brainer. -Putting House in the starting lineup is IMO a little less of a necessity as Bosh/Z both have range up to 20ft out on their jumpers to give Wade/LeBron some space to work with, but I still feel he should take over Arroyo's job. Arroyo is a good, solid PG who handles the ball well and can stroke the midrange, but he's a horrible defender and isn't much of a factor offensively when both LeBron/Wade are on the floor. He doesn't have great 3pt range, and when you have two superstar wingmen who do all the facilitating in the halfcourt, he becomes relatively useless. House is not a great defender, but he is feisty and can at least make some kind of impact on that side of the floor. He is also a dead-aim 3pt shooter with a quick release who can kill teams who leave the Big 3 open. I know everyone wants Miller to start once he returns from injury, but I think House is a better fit at starting PG for the team on both ends of the floor. -As I predicted before training camp even started, this team's defense is excellent (1st in the league in Drtg so far) and will only continue to improve. The team is making fast rotations, tightly contesting shots, defending the PnR very well, and creating a lot of turnovers. Most importantly, they are committed on that end of the floor, and so far the improvements have been evident...they gave up 46% shooting to the Celtics, 43% to the Sixers, a ridiculous 30% to the Magic, and 35% to the Nets. Their talent and athleticism, especially from the big 3, is really smothering a lot of their opponents. The biggest issues defensively have been at PG (where they won't get much better unless they make a trade), and C (with Anthony being undersized and missing rotations). If they start Z and continue to stay committed, this team is going to be dominant defensively. -Because of Arroyo and Anthony's deficiencies as starters, I don't think we have seen anything close to the potential Wade/LeBron have together on the floor, due to poor floor spacing/chemistry/having an offensive blackhole at C. However, I think the scariest thing about this offense has been the rotations where only one of them is on the floor. What I have seen the first few games is Wade and LeBron are taking turns running the team, and the team is not missing a beat/getting better as the other is getting rest. That should terrify other teams. So far, it is allowing each player to get a ton of rest and stay fresh, and also play their own game as opposed to deferring to one and other. What has resulted the last few games is the 2009-2010 Miami Heat with Bosh for 1/4 of the game, the 2009-2010 Cleveland Cavaliers with Bosh for 1/4 of the game, and the entire trio/just LeBron and Wade for the other half. I really like the idea of giving each player a good chunk of the game to be the undisputed #1 guy as the other gets rest. It is a proven method, and as the two superstars gain chemistry, they can be even more dangerous. -LeBron really needs to work on his off-ball movement when he and Wade are in the game. I think Wade has made the right adjustments and is doing a good job a making sharp cuts to the basket and staying active when the ball is in LeBron or Bosh's hands (although he should dive to the hoop more on LeBron drives), but LeBron acts like a spot-up shooter when he doesn't have the ball. Once he starts moving more without the ball, this offense is really going to be dangerous. -Overall, they are going to win a LOT of regular season games on sheer talent alone. Today against the Nets the big 3 overwhelmed them on sheer talent and individual play, and the game was out of reach before anyone else on the team made an offensive impact. Against the elite teams, they need to work on some of their offensive philosophies and sets when both Wade/James are in, but the improvements can be seen already. Once this offense really gets clicking, this team is going to be a really, really tough out.1 point

I think you'll see Brad's minutes going down with Dampier coming on and Jordan Hill getting minutes last night, seriously no worries tbh, once we get everything in order we will start winning.1 point

That's exactly what I was trying to say - it's not a myth that most black people were big fans of Bill Clinton...and why not? He did a lot for minorities and the poorer//middle class alike. And don't try to claim it's a racist comment, because it's not. Sure it's a generalization (hence the three LOL smiley face's) but he certainly helped the poor/minority class.1 point

43% shooting and 42% from behind the arc along along with his athletic plays hardly should be considered bad. I'm sure watching him get that triple double last season was too painful for you to watch too huh? Seriously though, I agree Ariza's offense was cringe worthy in the beginning of the season but I loved watching him play on both sides of the floor when he slid into a 3rd or 4th option type role. Agreed, the effort just isn't there. And I'll take Dampier and Jordan Hill (seriously Rick what the hell?) over Brad. The only role for Battier now is to be the vocal leader for the Rockets on the defensive end and that doesn't seem to be working. Lets hope they find that fix though.1 point

LOL Well I agreed with you when you said we would miss Ariza's defense I know he was a big success on that end but his offense was equally painful IMO. It's three games, two of which we easily could have got the win in so I don't think it's panic mode. But in no way did I envision them not trying, it's not even that we downgraded (which we did I know) but I am more pissed at the fact that we have not been that team that hustles to win. It's something that fans have gotten used to, and now that gritty attitude is gone, and they just look lazy. I agree Ariza being traded is partly responsible for that but other guys are not committing. You see Harrington fly in between Scola and Yao and get a put-back uncontested. You see Aaron Brooks sagging off his man so much that as a player you can't even recover when the ball is swung to the player he is defending. You see guys not even attempting a box out, I mean these are things that would frustrate any basketball fan it's basic fundamentals. I didn't expect the defense to be good this year, but I was hoping it would be average and then the offense could take care of the rest. Last night neither side did well, they could not buy a three even average defense would not have gotten the Rockets the win last night. On the flip side average defense would have probably made them 2-1 right now. But like you said they will live and die by the three. As far as Miller goes, I knew he would suck on defense we all did but I liked the signing because he's an Adelman guy. The only thing I underestimated is how old he actually is now, he used to be a gritty dirty player at times lol now he just looks slow and lost. The Rockets don't help him much either as he's getting burned that's a team effort that deserves criticism as well. He's still better than David Anderson, DA wouldn't even step in the paint to get abused. I still like the trade, Courtney Lee comes in and is effective I would like to see him play more because Battier has hit a new low so far, he's useless yet he's the only guy on the team with a reputation for defense and he's been burned bad this season by guys as well. Three games in the Rockets know what they need to fix, the earlier the better.1 point

I was driving to the rim the other day in a pick up game of 21 when all of a sudden a lawyer came out of nowhere. He told me that if I didn't stop I could be sued in the court of law because the move I was using was legally trademarked by Tyreke Evans I would have just dunked the ball, pissed on my hometown and caught the next flight to Miami, but I assumed that move was trademarked by LeBron James1 point

I would say that Harvin is ten times better than Lynch as well. The way he's being used in the Minnesota offense is definitely going to rack up some fantasy points for you. That being said, your RB situation doesn't look all that great, and with both Johnson's I think you could do this trade if you wanted to. It could go both ways in my opinion...but I would say to keep Harvin.1 point

Lower bound behind the basket? You better have cardboard cutouts of Delonte West and one of his mom if you can do that and wave them high so LeBron can see em when hes shooting free throws, do it [expletive]gott1 point

Let me just say that the game would've been a lot different if, say, the Wizards did anything well, or managed to compete. Then the Wizards would've resembled an NBA team. Then I'd be writing an article on how the Wizards are respectable, as opposed to how bad they are. That is all. One more thing, John Wall only scored two points from the line. I waited for a game where his soft attempts of finishing at the rim weren't excused by an opponent.1 point
