  4. It is amazing what a player can do when playing alongside a competent point guard. It is no coincidence that both Barnes and UNC started turning their season around once Drew left the team and Marshall was inserted into the starting lineup. As for Barnes himself, his season is alarmingly similar to DeMar DeRozan's freshman season at USC. Both were considered can't miss prospects coming out of high school (both were ranked #1 for their positions and considered the top high school recruits) and both had huge expectations from their respective programs with UNC playing in the NIT the year before Barnes' arrival and DeRozan filling in for Mayo. Both of them got off to slow starts and fell down mock drafts to the mid to late lottery but by the time that conference tournament came along, both picked their games up (DeRozan won MVP and Barnes has been clutch as hell for UNC) and scouts started taking notice of them again. I still think the Raptors were lucky to land DeRozan at 9 and it is looking like a team will experience the same thing with Barnes should he fall out of the top 3-5 like he is projected to as of right now. He is still, and has always been, number 2 on my Raptor draft list all season long. There is no denying the guys talent and honestly, what freshman wouldn't struggle with those ridiculous expectations that Barnes was faced with? The guy has NBA level skill, sounds like he has a great work ethic, seems to have a great head on his shoulders and just has an outstanding feel for the game. It was only a matter of time before he started to figure things out and start playing well. He is too talented not to.

  6. Interesting note on Jonas Valanciunas: I know it may not go over well with Raptor fans if they pick a project center from Europe considering Bargnani and all, but at this point in time, I honestly think that I would put him in my top 3 for the Raptors, right behind Kyrie and Barnes. I think that if he reaches his potential that he can become an absolute beast on the defensive end with his athletic ability, length and size. If the Raptors miss out on Barnes and Irving, I wouldn't be opposed to taking a chance on him at all depending on how he does in workouts. It would basically ensure another top pick for the Raptors as well, considering he won't come in and turn this team around immediately like Irving has a chance to do (although I don't think he will). Speaking of Valanciunas, his team was eliminated from Euroleague play today. He had 9 points on 4/5 shooting, 11 boards and a block. Jan Vesely, another highly touted European prospect, also played his last Euroleague game today as Partizan Belgrade didn't make the playoffs. He went out with a bang, though, as he put up 23 points on 9/12 shooting (2-4 from three) and 6 rebounds. I'm just excited to see how the tourmanet shakes up the draft board. Part of me is hoping that a guy like Terrence Jones dominates in the tournament because for some reason I think the Raptors are going to go on a bit of a run and completely ruin their draft stock. If somebody like Jones has an awesome tournament it may vault him over Barnes and allow the Raptors to draft him at around 6th or 7th or something like that.

  18. Exactly but the All-Star break has proven to be many times in the past as a shot in the arm for the Rockets. Somehow, someway, Houston decides step it up and make some good runs for the playoffs. Regardless I believe there was a strong push by Houston earlier in the season and I don't think I was all that excited back then, the way the Rockets have been playing this past week has been better than they were at any other point in the season. Anyways that is partly why I'm so optimistic right now but I have considered missing the playoffs as a definite possibility, but lets hope it doesn't come to that. If it does then the Rockets sacrificed a decent lottery pick for a late one in a weak draft. I think I mentioned that somewhere in my post. Match-ups are all about well...match-ups. Houston has proven many times in the past that they can tough it out with the Lakers unlike the Thunder or Mavericks. See my post above for this. Think of it this way: if the Rockets are struggling against the Mavs and Thunder right now, how do you think they will do in a playoff series? I highly doubt it will get easier. However, Houston has performed moderately well against the Spurs and Lakers and while both are going to be much tougher in the playoffs, I think I would rather take my chances with them instead of a team that we don't match-up well with at all.

  19. Its going to be tough and although we aren't exactly in the playoffs right now, we aren't far behind and the 8th and 7th seeds are currently tied and there is only one game separating them from the 6th spot. Without Carmelo I expect Denver to drop from 5th as well so the Rockets definitely have plenty to be optimistic about right now. Its going to take at least 14-6 to get in but thankfully the schedule strength we have right now is average at best, so if the Rockets beat the teams they are supposed to beat (like the Clippers tonight) then there is a very good chance they get in. In a perfect world the Rockets get in along with the Grizzlies and Suns (we own their lottery protected picks), doubt all 3 get in but I'm hopeful. Anyways I agree completely with your preferred matchups. Having to deal with athletic stars in Westbrook and Durant + an elite post defender would be a nightmare for our Rockets. Mavericks have always had our number, never feel comfortable heading into a game with them and while Hayes is a superb defender, he can't defend Dirk outside on the perimeter. The Lakers' size is frightening but their play this season and Bynum's health makes me more comfortable going up against them than the Thunder or Mavericks. They're tied with the Spurs as my #1, going to wait and see how we do against them in the next two games before I decide on my preferred match-up. ESPN gives us a 41% chance of making the playoffs and projects that we finish with 43 wins and have a 3 way tie with the Blazers and Suns for the 8th seed, which Houston loses. Just thought that might be interesting.

  23. Haha, okay then... Don't lie. First off, all of KG's missed games this season (nine) were also missed games for Perkins. Anyway... OPPONENT PPG, 2010-11 season 89.1 PPG with Perkins (1069 points) 91.9 PPG without Perkins (4229 points) 91.4 PPG without Perkins, but Garnett playing (3382 points) Garnett's nine games missed, Perkins also missed, so there's no reason to even discuss them. In the 12 games Perkins played, the opposing team scored over 96 points just once (101-97 loss to Dallas). That team (with Perkins) held the Magic to 80 points, and the Blazers to 78. Phoenix just scored 88. The Lakers (best offense in the NBA) was held to 92 points. The Miami Heat? Held to 82 points. So...without Perkins, and with a healthy Garnett, the Celtics allowed 91.4 PPG. With Perkins and a healthy Garnett, the Celtics allowed 89.1 PPG. ---------- OPPONENT FG%, 2010-11 season 42.1% (403-958) with Perkins 43.6% (1230-2821) without Perkins, and with Garnett playing So...without Perkins, and with a healthy Garnett, the Celtics allowed 43.6% FG. With Perkins and a healthy Garnett, the Celtics allowed 42.1% FG. Really? The truth is, the Celtics were lucky to play that out-of-shape Rasheed Wallace. They allowed just 83 points (their third best performance in the 24-game playoff run they had), and the only time they allowed 83 points or less was in the first two games of the first round, against the Miami Heat. It also helped that Drew played just 18 minutes, and took five shots, and was in need of the surgery he received after the series was over. Who defended Gasol in Game 7? It was Sheed, forcing Gasol into his third-worst shooting performance of our 23-game playoff run. Garnett couldn't do a damn thing on the glass because Bryant and Gasol had a combined 33 boards, and Sheed, Pierce, Davis and Rondo were making up for it. Three total boards for Garnett. Also, last season (and I remember seeing it on ESPN, before Game 7 and after Perkins' injury), the Celtics allowed 45% shooting with Garnett, and 45% shooting without, during the regular season. Next time you take shots at the community here, make sure you have your facts straight. Half of these guys will bury you alive in a basketball debate.
