  4. I posted this in the Valanciunas thread in the Raps forum, since Valanciunas plays for Rytas, and figured I'd mention it here. He played Lietuvos Rytas today, but he struggled. 10 points, 9 boards, 2 steals, 2/9 FG (2/2 3PT) and 4/4 FT in 29 minutes. He was 0/7 until hitting two threes late to make the game somewhat interesting, although it was out of reach by then (cut the lead from 11 to 5 I think). One thing about Motiejunas is that it looks like he has grown since the draft. He is looking absolutely huge out there. If I had to guess, he has grown to a legit 7'1 or 7'2 since the draft where he measured out 6'11 I believe. I talked about him not being able to play the 5 in the NBA, but now that I have seen his growth and length, I actually think he would be more than capable of playing there once he builks up a bit. He looks huge.

  8. Duncan did have amazing longevity, but not quite the same as Kobe's. I felt Duncan was around a top 3 player from 98-07, while Kobe has been from 00-present, and currently he is having one of the best individual seasons of his career and doesn't look to be slowing down much. Kobe has had a longer string of All-NBA 1st team selections and All-NBA Defensive selections. Kobe is about to be play in his 14th ASG, where as Duncan's streak ends this year (and Kobe will have 2 more All-Star starts). Kobe has stayed playing 35-40MPG for the last 14 seasons while Pop has needed to cut Duncan's minutes by around 10 minutes from when he was at his peak. All of Duncan's top 3 finishes in MVP voting came from 98-04, while Kobe's came from 02-10 and he is likely to finish top 3 this season. As I said, Duncan's longevity has been amazing, but Kobe's has been even better. As for accolades and accomplishments, right now they are nearly dead-even. Duncan has one more MVP and Finals MVP, while Kobe has one more championships and a few more All-NBA and All-Star selections, and 2 more scoring titles. The difference right now is that Kobe's accolades and accomplishments keep growing, with another scoring title and All-NBA 1st team selection likely to be added this season, while Duncan's pretty much done with the individual accomplishments. At their peaks, I felt Duncan was the slightly better player. He was an incredible post player who could give you 25PPG, was an unbelievable defender, great passer out of the post, and sensational rebounder. He simply impacted the game on a greater scale than Kobe. However, I feel his peak as that dominant #1 guy lasted less than Kobe's. For a decade now Kobe has been one of the very few players who can truly carry a team on his back by giving you 30PPG on solid efficiency (his TS% is almost always better than Duncan's, FWIW), can be the primary ballhandler and facilitate the offense while giving you 5-6APG, is one of the best rebounders at his position, can play lockdown defense when focused, and the one thing he could do that Duncan always needed guys like Ginobili for is he can be a guy you can give him the ball anywhere on the floor in clutch situations and have him consistently make a play. He also has been a tremendous leader, incredibly consistent, and gives you 40MPG if you need it (definitely a knock on Duncan when comparing him to Kobe). Overall, I just feel Kobe's longevity, both in the scope of his career and his peak, was more impressive than Duncan's, and they were close enough at their peaks to where that is the deal-breaker for me.

  9. Some decent stuff on Twitter after this game. Butler getting torn to shreds. The last two are my favourites.

  10. I'm so impressed by Butler. The guy literally doesn't play a single minute, hell, a single second, of recorded time and he manages to lose the game for the team.

  15. Valanciunas played today and I'm not exactly sure what he finished with. I know he had 16 points (5/6 shooting and 6/6 from the line), 4 rebounds and 4 blocks in 19 minutes after the 3rd quarter. From what I read on RealGM he made some poor mistakes in the 4th and the coach decided to go small, so I doubt his final stats were much more than what I posted above. As for how he is doing, well... 1st. in efficiency (23.3) 1st. in points per game (15.8) 2nd. in FG% (71.1%) 4th. in fouls drawn (4.8) 6th. in FT% (85.25%) 6th. in rebounds per game (7.4) 2nd. in Off. rebounds per game (2.9) 1st. in blocks per game (2) (numbers are Lithuanian League games) The best part of all this? He is doing this all in 23 minutes a game, which is 47th in the league.

  17. Too many shooters to tell, it's just you basically shooting quickly and getting very little elevation due to the lack of arm strength (most that lack that strength tend to jump very little on their shot, and release on the way up, which makes it tougher to aim because of the momentum). Keep your head up when you dribble, and I notice you probably have trouble with your left hand. Always pretend there's a defensive player ready to rip the ball when it is dribbled above your chest...even pushing the ball on the break, you never want it to get that high without being wide open and pushing it in front of you. When you receive a pass, catch it and establish a pivot foot by taking a small jab step out. What I do (kind of imitating Kobe) is catch the ball and, at the very same time the ball is centimeters away from my fingertips, I take a small two-step hop (pivot goes down first, and split-seconds later, my other foot hits to the left/right and above it), to establish both feet, one in front of the other, shoulder width apart. Try stepping into the pass as well. That puts me into a triple-threat, allows me to move my non-pivot wherever I please and makes my defender aware I have more options than just a jumper. More elevation on your shot means you have to shoot the ball with more arm strength, and one arm at that (you're almost shooting with two), while using your left arm as a guide more than anything else. Bend your knees more. Tough to do for some players...but it boosts your accuracy and gives you a better chance of making shots over defenders. Finally, left-side layups, left-handed. Right foot hits last (think that in your head). If you're having trouble with rhythm as you go to the rim, take a day or two and practice dribbling left-handed, and have the ball hit the ground with every step your right foot makes. Speed it up a bit, and as you approach the rim, think in your head, "Right and, right and, catch jump." On "catch" during the sequence, you'll be planting your left foot (the first of your two steps) as you gather the ball with both hands. The "jump" part of the sequence is you planting your right foot for the final time, lifting your left knee, and elevating with your left hand. Don't worry, it's not that big of a deal to need so much help with jumpshooting and ball-handling. I've been teaching it in camps since I was 19 or 20, and that was to high school kids, some seniors. There are college players that need coaching, and how many shooting coaches (like Chuck Person and Craig Hodges) are there in the NBA? Plenty.
