  6. Another thing is that the petty little flame wars really need to stop. New members are going to be turned off if they see ____ vs. Shaliq in 10 different threads, when it isn't even necessary. Just because you don't care enough to read all the things he posts or agree with all the the things he says, doesn't mean flame him in every thread. I don't really agree with alot of his posts either, but he's not really breaking any rules...so I'm not going to give him hell about it. Whether you want to admit it or not, he's one of the biggest contributors here and the forums would be even less active without him. Should be trying to encourage activity, not trying to kill it.

  7. While I can sit here and admit I don't have any recruiting ideas at the moment, I'm still going to look over new features, and consider other things that could help. I'm not going to let the ship sink until we are all ready, and it's understandable that some of you might be ready (lol), but I won't be for a long time. So, yeah...I have work to do, and it's all going to be on my shoulders simply because I'm still here and in this position. Make no mistake: I'm not dumping blame on any individual, we just need to make small adjustments as a community, and I'll do more as an owner. We can't go shut down Twitter, and we can't prevent new NBA message boards from popping up and giving our members that "wow" factor (which happens with everything new), but we can continue to swim until we find new ground. On the table, right now, I have to complete banners, complete rosters on the websites (which won't be THAT big of a priority just yet), figure something out with our homepage, and finally, consider a major upgrade to the message board (which also isn't a big deal, because it doesn't present us with new features). Additionally, we can brainstorm and think of ways to improve our followers' experiences on our Twitter account, hoping to recruit from there, and also, consider affiliations that may bring in curious NBA fans (even casuals). I'm not going to give up on you guys, as long as you can stay standing with the rest of the community, even if we are getting older. Most of us have been here since the first year or two, which was 5-6 years ago...so we can make it, and encourage our newer guys to do the same.

  8. Here's what the worksheet looks like (just 38 lines, which is 38 game topics out of the 1,230): http://i45.tinypic.com/2ekqa8g.jpg

  9. A few hours. I type up 1,230 rows in Excel, use concatenation to create the SQL entries, shut the board down for a bit, then import those entries as topics and posts.

  11. I think he wants to retire well before he hits 40, but that's easy to say, especially if LA is still contending (and it could very well happen, assuming Nash retires, Gasol is gone, Bryant signs for less, and we have cap room to add another star with Howard). It's going to suck, though.

  12. Lucas sure is a chucker. His shots were going in tonight so it wasn't really a problem but I can tell that he will drive me absolutely nuts if he plays like this (not looking to pass at all) when his jumper isn't falling. Of course, I knew this already so it isn't anything surprising. If his jumper is like it was tonight, by all means look for your own shot because it was definitely working for him. Amir looked awesome. He doesn't seem to be bothered by any sort of lingering injury which is nice to see since he really broke down towards the end of the year last season. With the big man depth the Raptors have this year I don't expect that to happen this season which will be huge since he is such an awesome energy big. Ross' jumper is beautiful. It sucks that he can't finish in the paint outside of open dunks or create his own shot at all, but when he has time to set his feet or take an in rhythym jumper, it is very nice to watch. I liked the perimeter defense they played. DeRozan, Ross, Lucas and Fields were all active, did a nice job fighting through screens and contesting shots. As far as the negatives I saw, the most obvious one is the frequency with which the Raptors fouled. They had a huge problem with this last season and that trend continued tonight. If they plan on playing an uptempo game, they really need to stop sending opposing players to the line every second possession. They reach way too often. Bargnani looked completely disinterested but it is the first preseason game so hopefully it is just some rust. Fields looked pretty lost offensively. There were times where he seemed to be completely clueless as to where he should go. He had one nice drive and drained a 3, but other than that he was a dud on offense. Not that I'm terribly surprised by that since it was the first game after all. Gray is just awful. Outside of grabbing some boards, he literally adds nothing to the team. He is way too slow on defense, has next to no mobility and offensively he is just clogging up the lane doing nothing. Why did they sign him to a $2.5M deal again? I'll leave it at that to avoid making this post too long winded. EDIT: Forgot to mention one thing and that is this: http://oi49.tinypic.com/122j12s.jpg Very pleased to see 10 of DeMar's 13 shots being attempted inside the paint. If he keeps up this kind of aggressiveness he will make a living at the line. He missed some very easy shots at the rim tonight but I don't care about that at all. It is very encouraging to see how he was constantly looking to attack the rim.

  13. 1) A plan asks for the help of the entire community, and we aren't going to get that. 2) Newer members don't feel welcome here. They feel out of place. This ties into #1 above. It's not that I'm assuming, either...I have had two new members message me and tell me they weren't staying for that reason (one basically telling me those exact words, the other hinting towards it). It's not because of everyone here, but quite a few just don't make this place an enjoyable board to post at. Our community is getting older each season, Twitter is dominating, and new members can't feel comfortable in a community that doesn't have but half of its members accepting new blood. A handful of members were screaming for me to eliminate a guy who has created a great deal of our basketball topics this year. That's how things are now. Yet, when a member is banned after serving seven suspensions, more than likely trolling everyone at some point of their stay here, it's a bad decision. Let me put it this way: Lakers fans were ran off because of that particular member (and a couple of others). Aaron (alcstarheel) was one of them, and he was a major contributor here. That's just one. Why, though? Most message boards accept the fact that there are more Lakers fans than any other...but when we had a new Lakers fan register, he was immediately welcomed with, "No, not ANOTHER Lakers fan." I've added a video system, a referral system, team forums have banners and colors according to that team, added personal blogs for a while, tried a podcast, had multiple sim leagues running, the only basketball message board (okay, besides RealGM) that has a game topic for every game of the season, and still...nothing, for a couple of seasons now. As of right now, I'm out of ideas.

  17. Yes. I actually told Kyle and the mods we weren't going anywhere from the start. Over the years, I've done questionable things to draw reactions...positive or negative...to get a feel of what I want to do in the future. I've shut it down once before to catch a hacker, stepped down once to do the same thing. I eliminated the entire staff, everyone but myself, a while back (don't remember why, but there was a reason for it). I swapped administrators, naming Smitty and Jammin the new admins, placing ALCS and Gamerguy as lead moderators, through the summer. I once locked up the forums after the Heat/Mavericks Finals series. The only real danger the site has been in, regarding the place shutting down, would probably be when I lost my vision. Of course, everyone that knows me outside of the site knows that was 100% legitimate (despite what a few jackasses said elsewhere), but even at that time, I gave full control to Aaron, and if he were to eventually step down (and he did, much later), I know Kyle would keep it going, anyway.
