I'm shocked to see Larsson fall to 4 and Courturier fall to 8. Great value at those spots for the Devils and Flyers respectively as both were in consideration for the number 1 pick at one point in time this season. It might make you wonder why they fell (more so Couturier than Larsson as he didn't really fall that far) but I still think that the two of them could easily become two of the better players in this draft, if not the two best players.

Pretty much as expected. Even if he isn't coming over next season I still absolutely love the pick. In fact, part of me is happy that he isn't going to be coming over right away. If there is a lockout, staying with Rytas for another season is going to be much better for his development than sitting around in Toronto with his thumb up his ass, especially if the entire season is locked out. Even if there is only a half season lockout or none at all, I still like the fact that he isn't coming over as he will still be playing in a competitive league and will have an extra year to add muscle in preperation for making the jump to the NBA in the 2012-12 season. If he were to come over immediately, I think he would struggle quite a bit with the stronger and more explosive athletes in the NBA, which could potentially hurt him confidence wise. Also, Rytas new coach is one of Dwane Casey's assistaints from his days in Minnesota and still has a very good relationship with Casey, so you know that the Raptors will have their say in Jonas' development next season as well. It would be nice to have him here next season, but I think in the long haul, it is better for him to spend another year with Rytas. This definitely won't help with all of the backlash over the pick, though.

Not really a surprise here. All of the talk about him not picking up the option was, in my opinion, him trying to scare the Raptors into giving him a long term contract. There was no way that he wouldn't be picking up this option considering he would not get a contract in FA close to the $7.6M that he will be making next season. Hopefully he has a great season and doesn't suffer any sort of injuries this upcoming year (if there is one) and the Raptors can manage to flip him to a contender at some point next season. After seeing how vital guys like Jason Terry and JJ Barea were to the Mavs this past season, I would imagine that quite a few teams wouldn't mind picking up a guy like Barbosa to bolster their bench for a deep playoff run, assuming that he plays well of course.

I actually think Larsson is the best player available anyways, in addition to fitting organizational needs. Don't get me wrong, RNH has a lot of talent and a great hockey sense, but I just don't think he is going to be the player that they project him to be in the NHL. Give me the smooth skating, two way, 6'2 205 pound defenseman over the 5'9, 160 pound playmaking center anyday of the week. I can certainly be wrong about RNH and I'm not saying he is going to be a bum or anything like that, but I don't see him as a 1st line, franchise calibre center like so many people are trying to hype him up to be.

The NHL Draft is tonight and gets underway in a couple of hours. How do you think the top 5 goes? Does Edmonton go with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins? Or do they go with Adam Larsson to add a defensive prospect to all of their offensive ones? Unfortunately, I have to work tonight so I won't see any of the 1st round. Should be a fun night, though.

The backlash of this pick is just hilarious. On one hand you have all of the casual Raptor fans screaming for Colangelo's head for drafting another European player. On the other hand you have a bunch of guys saying that this was a fantastic pick, some like Ric Bucher even going as far as to say that this was the steal of the draft.

Leafs get John-Michael Liles from the Avs for a 2nd round pick next year. http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369879 I know they were after him at the deadline, but from what I heard the Avs wanted a 1st and a prospect for him, which Burke wasn't willing to do (and rightfully so). I like the move simply because they need a guy that can play on their first powerplay unit (they were using Tim Brent on the point for crying out loud) and he is only signed for one more year so its not like they are committing to anything long term with him. The pick is going to be a late 2nd rounder anyways, considering they are trading Boston's 2nd that they got because of the Bruins making the Stanley Cup FInals. Very happy with this trade. Great move if you ask me.

Absolutely no way that Fredette should've been in the discussion for the Raptors pick. I can understand if somebody think that passing on Kemba or Knight for him was a questionable decision, but Jimmer? Even if he ends up being the best player to come out of this draft, I don't think anybody can realistically say that the Raptors made a terrible decision by taking Valanciunas over him. I'm not saying that you are implying that the Raptors should've went with him or anything like that, just that there is simply no way that he should even be mentioned, at least as far as I am concerned. Personally, I don't think that any of the point guards in this draft are a big enough upgrade over Bayless both in terms of what they would give the team next season as well as their potential to pass up the chance of getting a starting center for the next 10 years, especially considering the fact that the Raptors have basically never had a legitimate center in their entire history, unless you count a 100 year old Hakeem Olajuwon. Will Valanciunas develop into that guy? Who knows. I'd hate to pass up the chance at drafting one for two players who are likely to be solid role players, but nothing special, though. Valanciunas has star potential, granted it is unlikely he ever becomes a star, at least there is a chance of it. In a weak draft, you might as well swing for the fences and I think that the Raptors did that here. I'm just glad that it wasn't Biyombo that they decided to take a chance on because I think he is going to be the big bust of this draft. I think his defense is overblown and his offense is just brutal to watch. PS: My comment about them going after a point guard was more along the lines of them using some assets like the TPE, Bayless and Davis/Johnson to go out and make a trade for one. You mentioned that you thought the only way that you could call this a great pick was if they went out and traded for a PG, so my comment was in response to that. I don't think that Knight or Kemba would make a big enough impact to cost them a good draft pick, but if they went out and got a fringe All-Star calibre point guard, that certainly could hurt their draft stock especially if DeRozan takes another large step in his development.

The Houston Rockets and the 2009 NBA draft
Built Ford Tough replied to Dash's topic in Houston Rockets Team Forum
It is pretty sad that the guy taken 44th just may be the best player out of the bunch, especially when you consider that 4 of them were lottery picks. -
Three guards? Who is the third one? Knight, Walker and... To be perfectly honest, even though I liked Knight a lot (would've been fine with him at 5 even if Valanciunas was there, although Val was who I was hoping for), I don't even think he is that much better of a prospect than Bayless is. He certainly is younger, has better size and has a much better jumper, but as a whole I don't think that he is a much better prospect than Bayless is, especially considering how well Bayless played at the end of last season. Who knows if that is the real Bayless or if he was just on a hot streak, but I would like to find out. That is why I was so bothered by the fact that the Raptors didn't give him free reign with about 20 games left in the season to see what he could do. I'd rather give Bayless a shot and have Valanciunas in the organization, even if he won't be with the team next year, than having to basically ship out Bayless to make room for Knight because there would not be room on the team for both of them. I don't necessarily think that the Raptors should be in that big of a rush to make some huge move and bring in a legit point guard either. As much as I don't like Calderon, he will contribute to the Raptors being a crappy team next year and because of that, they will hopefully get a great draft pick and potentially land a franchise calibre player like Quincy Miller, Harrison Barnes, Michael Gilchrist or Anthony Davis. As much as I like DeRozan and Davis, neither one of them are going to be the best players on a championship calibre team. I wouldn't have been upset with Knight or Walker by any means, but I am glad that Colangelo didn't take the safe route and went with the high upside player like Valanciunas. I think he would've been a top 3 pick if there weren't buyout concerns with him and the fact that so many teams were intersted in moving up to acquire him, particularly San Antonio who is the best drafting franchise in the league as far as I am concerned, makes me like the pick even more. There are definitely some huge risks with this though, I don't deny that for a second. Valanciunas can become a more gifted offensively Tyson Chandler or Joakim Noah, but he could also become an Andris Biedrins. I think it is a risk worth taking, though.
-
Getting him, whether you are going to flip him somewhere else or hope he can beat out Dragic for the backup PG spot, is still a better asset than the 23rd pick in a shitty draft as far as I am concerned. Brad Miller is a non-factor so really, as far as I am concerned, this trade was Motiejunas and Flynn for a future pick in terms of actual assets. I imagine the future pick is going to have some form of protection on it as well as I don't see Morey giving up an unprotected 1st, so it is unlikely that the pick will end up costing you a top 5 selection or anything like that. I just don't see why you think it is a steep price. Either way, the Rockets got the guy they wanted in the end so I'm sure they, just like you, are very happy with the trade.

2011 NBA Mock Draft Challenge Thread
Built Ford Tough replied to Built Ford Tough's topic in NBA Draft History
So I just took a look back at last years thread, and the discrepency in the results is staggering. The winner this year had 33 points. If this was last year, that would've been good for a tie for 7th place. Last year the winning mock draft had 53 points. Kind of nuts. -
The best was the response after that. Jones: "How are you like Bosh?" Val: "I'm weak. Need to get stronger" You could tell that the guy was really uncomfortable with that interview. He had another one off camera and he sounded a lot better than he did when he was drafted. PS: People are going absolutely nuts right now. All of the idiot casual fans are absolutely shitting on Colangelo for drafting a European. He seems to be getting really pissed off and sick of defending his selection, and it has only been about 4 hours lol.
-
At least Van Gundy is honest when he said he has never heard of the guy, unlike Fran who tries to sound smart but then realizes he is talking out of his ass so he just says the generic "he is raw" comment. Epic name, though. His name alone probably got him drafted.

You guys can figure out the tiebreakers if you want). -

Kind of surprised that nobody took a flyer on Selby with a late 1st. There are obviously some huge concerns and question marks with him, but much like Hamilton, he has a lot of talent and could possibly develop into a very nice offensive player. I guess teams just weren't comfortable with giving him a guaranteed contract, which is understandable. Heat will probably draft Selby for the Wolves, though. They did just trade a guard after all, so they need to replace him.
-
Also happy for CoJo going to a first class organization like the Spurs and by being a 1st round pick. I was kind of hoping he would fall to the 2nd and Toronto would buy a pick to get him, but if that couldn't happen I am glad to see him go to San Antonio as that is a great place to be drafted into.
-
Swing for the fences and take Selby? Makes sense after moving Hill.
-
Man, Jordan Hamilton has absolutely plummeted. At one point in time there was talk about him going as high as 10 (when the Bucks had the pick) and now he might even not go in the first round. Are people that concerned about his attitude? His talent is undeniable so it must be. EDIT: Speak of the devil.
-
Brooks will be going to Jersey.
-
Sounds like Boston is going to move this pick:
-
I wouldn't say steep considering they got Flynn as well. The 23rd pick is whatever as far as I am concerned and I'd imagine the first next year is going to have some protection, possibly lottery protection. Flynn had an awful year this year, but he does have some talent and Motiejunas could be a very good offensive big man. I think it was a pretty damn good trade for Houston. They do need to make some sort of move with their glut of power forwards, though. Paterson, Morris, Scola and Motiejunas is a very crowded position.
-
This makes no sense. Why trade up for a guy who very likely could've been there at 28 and somebody who won't even be in the NBA for at least 3 years? Unless they know something that the majority doesn't, I don't understand this at all.

I'd rather have Hamilton since he has the potential to develop into a reliable offensive player and take some of the offensive load off of Rose. He is the most gifted offensive player left, so he would be my pick.
