Rashard Mendenhall has a torn anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, in his right knee and will be placed on injured reserve by the Steelers. The 24-year-old halfback will have surgery in one or two weeks after the swelling goes down, although a source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette there is little swelling and that it appears there is no other damage in the knee. Such injuries usually require 6-8 months of recuperation and rehabilitation before a player can return, although it can vary widely. Rod Woodson famously had the injury in September 1995 and returned to play in the Super Bowl 4 1/2 months later. The Steelers hope Mendenhall will be able to participate in training camp next August. The Buffalo Bills stopped Tim Tebow’s march to the playoffs cold Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium after he threw a career-high four interceptions in Buffalo’s 40-14 win over the Broncos. All four of Tebow’s interceptions—he had just two on the season coming into the game—came in the second half, a stark contrast to the closing ability that has generated national buzz surrounding the quarterback. Instead of his sixth fourth-quarter comeback, Tebow essentially handed the game over to the Bills, finishing just 13-of-30 passing for 185 yards, one touchdown and those four picks, a rating of 35.4. “(It’s) probably safe to say that,” Tebow said, when asked if it was the worst game of his career. “We weren’t able to execute on third downs well enough and put ourselves in a bad position, then tried to force to catch up.” Coach John Fox didn’t sound as if he’s lost faith in Tebow, explaining the miscues as “a couple of misreads" and Tebow himself kept an upbeat attitude—perhaps not a surprise—despite the loss. “My confidence is just fine,” he said. “I have to do a better job of not giving them opportunities. I tried to make something happen, and I tried to force it.” Source: Sporting News

Osi Umenyiora's ankle has "not really" improved and he could miss his fifth straight game Sunday night, according to a source familiar with the situation. He will test out his severely sprained ankle this week - probably Thursday - the source said but the defensive end remains sore after he injured it in a Nov. 28 loss to the Saints. "No push, no play," said the source, referring to the lack of drive the injury has caused the two-time Pro Bowler. But the source emphasized that Umenyiora, 30, wants to get back on the field. He has seven sacks in eight games and has one more year remaining on his contract. Source: Dallas Morning News

Eagles RB LeSean McCoy could miss the Week 17 game against Washington, reports NFL.com on Monday. McCoy went to the locker room between the third and fourth quarter on Saturday in the Week 16 game after he sustained a left ankle injury. He got looked at on the sideline before heading to the back on a cart. X-rays came back negative as he returned to the field. Reports are saying Ronnie Brown could start against the Redskins Week 17. The Dallas Cowboys have decided not to pursue signing a veteran quarterback at this time, a team source said -- a strong indication that the team believes Tony Romo should be capable of both starting and throwing effectively against the New York Giants on Sunday night in a game that will determine which team wins the NFC East and advances to the playoffs. "He will be fine," another source said. Romo suffered a bruised hand when he struck it on Jason Babin's helmet on the fourth offensive play of the team's 20-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. With the Giants beating the Jets earlier on Saturday, the outcome of the Eagles' game meant little. Had the Giants lost, Romo would have campaigned more to return, he said. "I would've tried very hard," he said. "No question. I did a little bit, but the coaching staff decided against that." Source: ESPN.com

Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer may be coaching for his job this week according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. The Jets are now 27th in the NFL in total offense and looked like a complete mess on Saturday against the Giants. They attempted 68 passes (59 attempts, 5 sacks, 4 scrambles) and just 25 rushes. Schottenheimer’s contract runs through 2013, but if the Jets are looking for someone to pay should they miss the playoffs, he would be the most likely candidate. Head coach Rex Ryan is not going anywhere and they are not giving up on quarterback Mark Sanchez. Source: The Redzone

Kobe Bryant traveled to Germany in October to undergo an innovative procedure on his left ankle, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. It was Bryant's second such trip during the offseason. The Los Angeles Lakers guard underwent an experimental but increasingly popular procedure in Germany in July in an attempt to help heal his oft-injured right knee, a source told ESPNLosAngeles.com at that time. The procedure, called platelet-rich plasma therapy, consists of centrifuging the patient's blood to isolate platelets and growth factors. The mix is then injected into the injured area to accelerate healing. The concentrated growth factors have been shown to speed tissue growth and healing in surgically created lesions in lab animals.Golfer Tiger Woods, New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee also reportedly have undergone the treatment.Bryant, 33, has been bothered in recent seasons by an arthritic joint in his right knee. He has undergone three other knee procedures since 2003, including surgery last July to remove unspecified loose bodies. Source: ESPN

As Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose prepared Sunday to open the season against the Los Angeles Lakers, his mind was focused on the present, but he did entertain a question about the future. And his answer to whether he'd like to emulate Kobe Bryant by playing his entire career in one city should sit well with Bulls fans."I would love to," he said.As preposterous as it sounds, Rose -- the 23-year-old MVP from Chicago's Englewood neighborhood -- didn't want to be presumptuous and said he would stay unless the Bulls traded him."It's all up to them," he said. "I would love to be here, be a Bull for the rest of my life, but it's really not up to me."For sure. There's no other team I think I would rather be on than the Chicago Bulls. Me living in another city, no. (Chicago is) just a perfect place for me." Source: ESPN

All of the public, pregame snipping between the two New York teams created a nice storyline to an already-enticing matchup of rivals battling for playoff berths. The tensions further flared hours before Saturday's game, when the Jets placed black curtains in front of the Giants' four Super Bowl logos in front of their MetLife Stadium locker room.Once the game finally started, and physical play replaced pregame chatter, the Giants smacked the Jets 29-14, putting Gang Green behind the eight ball in the AFC wild-card race. Big Blue then proceeded to take glee in reminding their rivals of their little-brother status in New York, as Giants running back Brandon Jacobs reportedly exchanged words with Jets coach Rex Ryan after the game's final whistle."Time to shut up, fat boy!" Jacobs yelled at Ryan, according to The Star-Ledger.It didn't end there.Jacobs told the New York Daily News that he instructed the Jets coach to "shut the (expletive) up," and Ryan reportedly told the running back to "go (expletive) himself)."Jacobs also told The Star-Ledger that Ryan went after him on the field "the way his pops (Buddy Ryan) went after (Kevin) Gilbride." Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said a bruised right hand will not keep him from playing in next week's winner-take-all finale at the New York Giants."I'll be fine," Romo said as he walked to the elevator after Saturday's 20-7 loss to Philadelphia. "I think I just took a hit from the helmet. We're going to be all right though."Romo was hurt with 9:52 left in the first quarter when Eagles defensive end Jason Babin drove him to the ground on an incomplete pass. Romo was slow to get up and was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. That's when things got about as interesting as they'd be the rest of the afternoon. The drama began with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones leaving his midfield viewing booth to chat with Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. Jones returned to his booth about the same time Romo returned to the sideline. Source: ESPN

On the eve of a new season, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose admitted that he still hasn't completely gotten over the fact that his team lost in five games to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals last spring."I'm not over it yet," he said before the Bulls' Saturday morning practice at UCLA. "I'm still thinking about it. That was one of the things that is still driving me right now is wanting to be able to be in that position again to see what I'm going to do about it. I think I've been preparing myself for it, but we will have to see."Rose said he can still remember the disappointment he felt after the game that night."Walking off at the end, at the (United Center)," Rose said. "Putting everything on me because I thought it was my fault and just working out this whole summer." Source: ESPN

The Boston Celtics signed Mickael Pietrus after the veteran swingman cleared waivers Saturday night.Pietrus' agent, Bill McCandless, said the one-year deal is worth a league-minimum $1.3 million."We are very excited to be able to add Mickael to our team," Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said in a statement released by the team. "His skills as a perimeter defender and an outside shooter provide great versatility to the roster."Pietrus is scheduled to undergo his physical exam in Boston on Monday because of the holiday, which means he won't be available to the team until Tuesday's visit to Miami at the earliest. Paul Pierce remains "doubtful" to help the Boston Celtics tip off the NBA season against the New York Knicks on Sunday, coach Doc Rivers told reporters.Pierce did not practice at all Friday due to his bruised right heel, Rivers said, but will try to practice Saturday before the team makes a final decision.Even if he is able to play, it will probably be in a limited role as a reserve, Rivers said while Sasha Pavlovic will likely start in his place."He seems to be working more -- as far as working out," Rivers said, according to ESPNBoston.com. "We'll see. I still think it's doubtful, but we'll see. Source: CBS Sports

With the prospect of a trade for Dwight Howard fading and the season opener less than a week away, New Jersey Nets coach Avery Johnson was getting a feel for his team. That all changed Thursday when center Brook Lopez broke his right foot, an injury that left Johnson shaking his head and considering his options.Lopez, the Nets' leading scorer, had surgery Friday for a nondisplaced fracture. He was hurt in a preseason game against the Knicks on Wednesday and will be sidelined at least six weeks and probably more.In the meantime, general manager Billy King acquired former All-Star center Mehmet Okur from Utah for a second-round draft pick, signed free agent guard DeShawn Stevenson and waived forward Ime Udoka. With the additions of Okur and Stevenson, the Nets have hit the salary cap, so their revamped team is set.It has one star, point guard Deron Williams, and a lot of new faces -- Okur, Stevenson, free agent forwards Shawne Williams and Sheldon Williams, rookies Marshon Brooks and forward Jordan Williams and holdovers Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Damion James and Kris Humphries.
