Swingman Returns Following Career Year With Team in 2011-12 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has re-signed forward/guard Cartier Martin. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. "Cartier has been with our team for parts of the past three seasons and he has always made a positive contribution both on the court and in the locker room," said Grunfeld. "In addition to his three-point shooting touch, he is a good defender and gives us another solid veteran to help solidify our bench." Martin averaged a career-high 9.3 points to go along with 3.4 rebounds while shooting .440 from the field and .387 from three-point range in 17 games (two starts) with the Wizards last season. He was originally signed to consecutive 10-day contracts by the team (on March 28 and April 8, respectively) before being signed for the remainder of the season on April 18. Martin topped 20 points twice for the Wizards last season (including a career-high 22 points in an April 21 win at Miami) and scored in double figures six times. Martin holds career averages of 5.0 points and 1.9 rebounds while shooting .371 from three-point range in 120 games between Washington, Charlotte and Golden State. The Los Angeles Clippers today signed All-Star forward Blake Griffin to a multi-year contract extension. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced. After averaging 20.7 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 66 games played last season, Griffin was named to the NBA's 2012 All-NBA Second Team. Griffin led the Clippers in points, rebounds, field goals made and attempted, free throws attempted and minutes while playing every game last season. Griffin was the only player in the NBA last season to average 20+ points, 10.5+ rebounds and 3.0+ assists and was one of only two players in the league (Dwight Howard) during the 2011-12 campaign to average 20+ points, 10.5+ rebounds and shoot at least 54 percent from the field. Griffin's standout season helped the Clippers finish the year as the fifth seed in the 2012 Western Conference Playoffs and win their First Round matchup against the fourth seeded Memphis Grizzlies. Griffin averaged 18.0 points and 6.4 rebounds during the Clippers seven game series against the Grizzlies, which culminated with a stunning Game Seven Clippers' victory in Memphis. Rumor Central: Dempsey to Anfield? Brendan Rodgers has high hopes for Liverpool – and he's wasting no time trying to reinforce his squad for that pursuit. The newly appointed manager is eager to make his first signing since taking over the Reds on June 1, and one of his first targets happens to be US international Clint Dempsey. According to a report by the English newspaper The Mirror, Rodgers and the Liverpool front office are set to bid £7.5 million in an attempt to pry the English Premier League's fourth-leading scorer in 2011-12 away from Fulham's Craven Cottage and north to Anfield.
