Dooling opens up about his history of abuse, reasons for his retirement When Keyon Dooling retired last week, it was a surprising development. He had just signed a new contract with the Boston Celtics in July, and by all accounts he still had much to contribute to the team and locker room as a veteran leader and capable perimeter defender. Many grasped at reasons for his decision, and the logic wasn't always there. On Thursday, CSNNE.com published a story on Dooling's decision and the life experiences that went into it. It's a brave set of revelations from Dooling, who discusses his history of abuse and his hopes for the future. A small sampling of a must-read piece: "I was talking about it with my wife and with my pastors and all the people that are in my life, and nobody wanted me to retire. Nobody wanted me to retire," he said. Years of repressed emotions came rushing back during this realization. Memories that Dooling had tried to bury were flooding out. "I actually had such a meltdown that I had to get professional help and I ended up in the hospital," said Dooling. "It just all came to a head. To be honest with you, I blocked a lot of things out of my life. I'm a man who's been abused, sexually, emotionally, mentally. I've been abused in my life, and there's so many guys around the NBA who have been abused and I know it because I've been their therapist. I didn't even have the courage because I blocked it out so much that I couldn't even share that . . . "It took literally a meltdown for everybody to see how serious I was about not playing ball anymore." But he was absolutely serious. "For so long I've always denied myself and what I feel for others, in particular my family of origin and my wife and my children and my friends who I really trust," he said. "It just got to the point where it was like, they don't know how much pain I'm in. They don't know how lonely the road can be. They don't know the stuff that comes along with being an NBA player. They don't know how many people call my phone begging for money every day. They don't know how many people call me asking for advice. They don't know how many people rely on me to be happy when they're down. They don't understand the grind that mentally I have to go through to be this man I am every day. "I just gave out too much and I wasn't getting enough back . . . [With] the exception of the Celtics organization, nobody ever truly appreciated me until this year." Full Story

Jay Bruce appears to levitate in right field (Photo) http://media.zenfs.com/en/blogs/sptusmlbexperts/redsbruce.jpg Joe Robbins/Getty Images) The power of Nuxhall compels you! Here's Cincinnati Reds right fielder Jay Bruce doing some sort of levitation routine after Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez hit a home run on Thursday afternoon. You'd think that Bruce might use that Iron Man-type blastoff power to improve that negative UZR of his and help turn Great American Ballpark into a pitcher's palace, but we can't all be Travis Snider-Man. L.A. backs deal for downtown NFL stadium LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles took a major step Friday toward building a downtown stadium to lure an NFL team back to the nation's second most populous city, despite questions about how a 72,000-seat venue in the city's urban core would impact notorious freeway traffic, nearby housing prices and air quality. The 12-0 vote by City Council came after starkly contrasting predictions about what the $1.5 billion project would mean for an economically troubled city that has fretted over the loss of professional football since the Raiders and Rams fled Southern California in 1994. Supporters said the deal with developer Anschutz Entertainment Group would create thousands of jobs, a center of civic pride and new tax dollars for cash-starved City Hall, while critics warned that nearby housing prices would soar and traffic would come to a virtual standstill on game days. ''I know the result will be the return of economic vitality,'' Councilman Paul Koretz predicted. The vote was overshadowed by the recent announcement that AEG was seeking a new owner, though company officials have assured City Hall the stadium plan will remain the same, even if the company changes hands. The biggest question about the stadium is the most obvious: There's no one to play in it. But Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other supporters hope the agreement will eventually attract a team to one of the nation's most lucrative media markets. Read More Cool!!

Doug Fister throws nine straight strikeouts, says he was unaware he set AL record Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister set an American League record on Thursday, going through the entire Kansas City Royals lineup and issuing each member a strikeout in consecutive fashion. The nine straight strikeouts — spanning from Salvador Perez as the last out of the fourth to Billy Butler for the second out of the seventh inning — surpasssed the previous record of eight, set by several pitchers. Tom Seaver owns the National League record with 10. Not that Fister knew he had etched his name into the history books with his feat. Prince Fielder approached him as the pair walked off the field in the seventh inning and Fister simply shook him off like a pesky telemarketer: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/doug-fister-throws-nine-straight-strikeouts-says-unaware-234314343--mlb.html

Milestone watch for 2012-13: Kobe Bryant Pass Magic Johnson, tie Michael Jordan with six rings http://i.imgur.com/rizLI.jpg The record, as far as hoop purists are concerned. From the moment the Black Mamba stepped into the league, this number (six) sticks out as the benchmark. Kobe is not unaware of this. Move into fourth all-time in scoring, passing Wilt Chamberlain All Kobe needs is a "mere" 1,936 points. If Kobe averages at least 25 ppg, he'll reach this toward the end of the season. Third all-time free throws made (passing Oscar Robertson) With 288 free throws, Kobe moves past the Big O and behind Moses and Karl Malone in the free throws made department. Last year, he made 381 in 58 games. All-time steals leader in Lakers' history (needs two to pass Magic Johnson) Barring a fluke, Kobe should notch this within the first week of the season. This isn't the last time he's looking to pass Magic in a category. Most All-NBA First Teams (11, with Karl Marlone) This record is arguably hardest to reach, considering -- or assuming -- Dwyane Wade comes back injury-free. With new weapons in Steve Nash and Dwight Howard at his side, his load will be lower, thus standing a chance to decrease his statistical output. Most All-NBA Teams (15, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) This record, on the other hand, is a virtual cinch. If Kobe is healthy this season, it's impossible to identify six guards better who can keep him from tying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Most All-NBA Defensive First Teams (10, passing MJ, Gary Payton and Kevin Garnett) Another tough milestone to reach. Kobe still gets after it defensively and with upgraded defensive personnel behind him (read: Howard, Dwight), he can be as aggressive on the perimeter as ever. Most All-NBA Defensive Teams (13, with Tim Duncan) Even if Kobe struggles guarding quicker players, his grit and I.Q. alone makes this milestone his for the taking. More than 30,000 career points (youngest to reach mark) Wilt Chamberlain reached the 30,000 point plateau when he was 35 years old. Kobe just turned 34 and needs just over 500 points. Most playoff points, passing Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) Kobe currently sits at 5,640 playoff points, 347 away from MJ and 122 from Kareem. He'll need a deep playoff run to take top spot (conference finals, Finals). Galleries.NBA.com/gallery/Milestone-Watch-for-Kobe

Lakers' Jordan Hill pleads no contest to assault, gets probation By Ben Bolch http://i.imgur.com/D94ze.jpg The reserve forward was accused of choking his former girlfriend. He agrees to serve one year of probation, pay a fine and other conditions as the charge is reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor. The Lakers avoided one potential headache before the start of training camp when Jordan Hill pleaded no contest to assault charges Thursday in Houston and the reserve power forward was sentenced to one year of probation. Hill must also pay a $500 fine, undergo domestic violence counseling, make a $100 donation to a violence fund and avoid any contact with his former girlfriend, who had accused him of choking her in February at a time when Hill played for the Houston Rockets. As part of the arrangement, the charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor. Hill could have faced up to 10 years in prison had he been convicted of a felony offense. "Jordan decided to kind of put this all behind him so he could play basketball without any distractions," Hill's attorney, Rusty Hardin Jr., said of the no-contest plea. Hill's conviction will be wiped from his record if he demonstrates good behavior over the course of his probation, Hardin said. Read More

Clippers Exercise Option on Bledsoe http://z.cdn.turner.com/dr/nba/teamsites-set5/release/clippers/sites/clippers/files/imagecache/slider_image/bledsoe-670-120920.jpg The Los Angeles Clippers have exercised the club’s fourth-year contract option on guard Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe, who is entering his third NBA season, has averaged 5.6 points, 2.9 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 19.0 minutes over his career. The 6’1” guard out of Kentucky made a name for himself during the Clippers 2012 Playoff run, averaging 7.9 points overall while shooting 59 percent from the floor and 43 percent from behind the three-point line. He came into his own in the Clippers second round playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, tallying 11.5 points while shooting 70 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range.
