  1. I'm sorry if my post came across as me throwing the entire fanbase into one big stereotype, didn't intend for it to sound like that. I know plenty of very cool Yankee fans. It just so happens that the fanbase is very large, so for every legitimate Yankee fans it seems like there are 4 or 5 bandwagoning idiots. And I don't really care for the cap argument either. Obviously baseball is an uncapped league but honestly there are about 5 or 6 teams with a nearly unlimited budget. I just think the Yankees get talked about most because they are the most attractive market for a lot of free agents. If three teams offer a star free agent $20 million a season, there's a pretty good chance he will sign with the Yankees (obviously depends on the player of course, I know Sabathia didn't really want to go to New York so the Yankees had to kick in even more money there, but that's an isolated case). If the Red Sox or Cubs were "that team" that had a lot of success in the last century, had the huge fanbase and 20-something trophies, they would probably be the destination of choice and everybody would talk about them in the light that many people talk about the Yankees today. Also, on a slightly unrelated note, people need to realize that even though Major League Baseball is an uncapped league, it does not mean teams can just spend at will. Obviously the Yankees can, the Red Sox, Cubs, Mets, Dodgers, and possibly Angels all probably could, but most teams have strict budgets. So the people who say "well it's an uncapped league, why doesn't the owner of such-and-such middle market team just offer as much money as possible to sign the hot free agent", it is not as simple as that.
  2. I clearly didn't stereotype the entire fanbase. I have been to a handful of games at Yankee Stadium and I know that the loyal Yankee fans are legit. I also know that they happen to have far more stupid bandwagoners than any other team in Major League Baseball. My point was that the general perception of Yankee fans leads a lot of people to dislike the team (similarly to why people hate Philadelphia teams, but a slightly different reason). Also the fact that you can't argue with many of them, because it will always turn into "my team has more championships than your team". Not generalizing an entire fanbase, but I have personally encountered this many times.
  3. Not even that. There are a handful teams who could probably spend as much as the Yankees do. I honestly think the main reason people hate the Yankees is the general perception of the fans. Obviously there are the real Yankee fans like Waldo, but it always seems like there are far more who do not care about the game of baseball or know anything beyond the Yankees, they just say "hey I do not like baseball but I will root for the Yankees because of the 26 rings. Also, I cannot name anybody on the team besides Jeter A-Rod and possibly Teixeira".
  4. On a side note....Speights with a hell of a game tonight...32 points and 12 boards and 2 blocks.
  5. [expletive] When the [expletive] did the Phillies infielders forget how to play defense, particularly Chase Utley. He has been absolutely brutal in the field this series. I said earlier today that I was okay with a split in LA, but we had this game and handed it to them on a silver platter. That is not okay.
  6. Everybody knows how bad he is now. Ed tried to find some sucker to take him at the deadline last year, but not surprisingly nobody was that dumb.
  7. Yes they already accomplished what they needed to do in LA. Even if they lose today they are in pretty good shape. I just hope they don't take that mentality. Some of the interviews yesterday suggested that they were already satisfied, so I sure as hell hope they don't lay off the gas today. Yes, taking back homefield is nice but a 2-0 stranglehold would be amazing. As for last night, it was a typical Hamels outing, except his fastball was about as good as it's been all season. All three of his pitches were working, but as usual he had a few mental lapses which really cost him. He pounded Manny in with fastballs for his first two at-bats and Manny could not touch him, then in the third at bat throws 3 straight changeups for some reason, and as expected Manny went deep. I guarantee you the bench was calling for more fastballs and Ruiz was too, but Cole can get pretty stubborn sometimes. And right before that, he was clearly upset when Rollins and Utley butchered the would-have-been double play that Ethier grounded in to. I would have been upset too but he did not need to show them up like he did. The bullpen was surprisingly great, with the exception of Madson. Lidge looked awesome with the exception of the 0-2 slider he grooved right over the middle of the plate to Kemp. I did not mind him pitching around Loney either to get the matchup with Belliard. All I can ask of Pedro today is to limit the damage and keep them in the game. He has not pitched since September 30th, and with him I do not know if the extra rest will help him or hurt him. Also, from my years of watching Vicente Padilla here in Philadelphia, I know how much of a basket case he is, so if we can rattle him early it might be an early exit. But if he gets into a rhythm he can be lights out. Hopefully the bad Vinny shows up today .
  8. That would be awesome but will the Sixers really be willing to put his contract on the bench? I think if any of us were in the organization, his [expletive] would have been benched sometime last season. I honestly don't know how the Sixers are with these types of things.
  9. What is the point of this though? This trend is going to continue as long as sports exist. As technology continues to enhance itself players continue to be bigger and stronger. It is impossible to know how good Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb would be in this era with a modern training regimen, just like it's impossible to know how Albert Pujols would have done in the 1930s. So yes, all we have to go on is stats. We can use trends in those stats to make judgements about players (aka the liveball era/steroid era in baseball, or the new/old NHL), but that's about it. It's sort of a given that a modern professional athlete would beat the [expletive] out of anybody from a past generation lol.
  10. It would be nice but I don't think it's gonna be that easy. We got kinda lucky with the Rockies matchup since they are so loaded on the left side of the plate, so we got to toss 4 lefties their way and essentially shut that lineup down with the exception of game 2. The Dodgers have a far more balanced lineup. The bottom line is that this cannot become a battle of the bullpens. If we go into the 7th inning tied or trailing, it will be a major uphill battle against Belisario, Kuo, Sherrill, and Broxton. We need to get to their starters.
  11. Pitching matchups: Game 1: Cole Hamels @ Clayton Kershaw Game 2: Pedro Martinez @ Vicente Padilla Game 3: Hiroki Kuroda @ Cliff Lee Game 4: Randy Wolf @ Joe Blanton/JA Happ Game 5: Clayton Kershaw @ Cole Hamels Game 6: Pedro Martinez @ Vicente Padilla Game 7: Cliff Lee @ Hiroki Kuroda Also, Phillies with a couple roster moves for this round. Brett Myers and Kyle Kendrick are off the roster, and Chan Ho Park and Eric Bruntlett are on. Glad to see Park is back, also glad that Bruntlett is on the bench. They really don't need 12 pitchers, especially since one of Blanton/Happ will be in the pen, and Bruntlett adds a speed element that could come in handy.
  12. Probably, but that's just how it goes. We will be saying the same things about today's generation 50 years from now. It is impossible to prove this, so all we have to go on are memories of how dominant players were in their era, and the stats they put up.
  13. My dad has a Sports Illustrated subscription. For school, I have a subscription to The Wall Street Journal and Business Week, but the school pays for both haha.
  14. And nobody really cares about the Phillies outside of the Philadelphia area haha. Obviously the Yankees will get huge ratings no matter who they are playing. The Dodgers have way more of a national fanbase than the Phillies. Hell, they still have old Brooklyn Dodgers fans.
  15. Listen to The Dark Side of the Moon while high. It will completely make sense.
  16. I don't think so. I used to think they were overrated, but now I think that so many people find them overrated that they are actually a bit underrated (if that makes any sense). No matter what you think of their musical ability or if you care for their music, you have to respect them. To pump out as many number one tracks and albums as they did is simply amazing. They are not always my favorite band to listen to, but they deserve every ounce of respect and recognition that they get. And kingfish, gtfo with that Blink 182 BS. The Beatles revolutionized the music industry more so than anybody in the 20th century.
  17. The national media still has a boner over the Dodgers. And the Phillies/Rays World Series last year had the worst ratings of all time I believe. So it's no wonder why Fox is pulling for either the Yankees to make it, or for a Dodgers/Angels series (which would be absolutely huge out west).
  18. Yeah I have it in my car. Pretty much only listen to channels 5-10 and 14-16. Occasionally Howard Stern.
