Anyway, maybe Steve Smith will actually get some playing time today. Although I am guessing Jackson's playing time will be taken mostly by Avant/Cooper. Seems like as good a chance as any to get Smith involved.

Oh, my favorite part will be the draft pick compensation from whichever team signs Madson. Two high picks. Of course, we lose our own first round pick for signing Papelbon, but we will have a net gain of one high pick.

Madson deal falls through and the Phillies instead opt for Jonathan Papelbon. Details are not all out there yet, but it looks like 4 years and close to $50 million and possibly a 5th year option. Yikes. It isn't that I am upset about replacing Madson with Paps...similar ages, seemingly equal ability (perhaps slight edge Papelbon). But that is some serious money for a dude who will appear in roughly 5% of the total team innings this season. Over the past few weeks, I've talked myself into accepting this, since it was clear Amaro planned on spending big on a "closer". So I saw this coming, but it is still a terrible use of budget. Ah well, money being no object, Papelbon is a hell of a pitcher and I look forward to seeing him in red pinstripes. Anyway, I guess this means I can officially say so long to Ryan Madson. Really enjoyed seeing him pitch these past 8 seasons.

Nabokov deal may not go through apparently.

Evgeni Nabokov traded to the Blue Jackets for Fedor Tyutin. This is actually quite intriguing, although their problems run far deeper than goaltending. Seems like a solid shot for Nabokov though. Jackets also traded Kris Russell to St. Louis.

I like it. Basically the going rate for defensemen of his ilk. Pronger and Timonen are getting old, Matt Carle is probably in line to be overpaid this offseason, and there are no solid defensemen coming up through the pipeline. Losing Coburn would have been devastating. Glad they got this over with for a reasonable price.

Well, it's hard to argue that Paterno, or anybody, is as culpable as the guy who actually carried out the assaults. But you are right. The Penn State "culture" is definitely a major reason nobody went forward, namely Mike McQueary or the janitor. McQueary's career would have likely been over before it started if he brought this scandal out to the public. Not making an excuse for him, but rather giving a reason.

Could not take my eyes off CNN last night, despite needing to go to sleep. That was absolutely unreal. I feel bad for all of the reasonable people associated with Penn State, because right now that entire institution is an embarrassment to humanity. Speaking of embarrassments, the Board of Trustees press conference was an embarrassment to journalism. Those "reporters" crying about Paterno not getting a proper send-off should have all present and future press credentials revoked. This whole thing is quite sad and I could go on for a while about it.
