I tried using GIMP after I'd already used PS for 2 months and I found it confusing. But that's more likely due to getting used to PS; I'm sure I would have found PS confusing if I had used GIMP beforehand. I'm not sure how different they are, but I know a few people who have gotten really good at using GIMP.

You might find this surprising, but continuing to make sigs is one of the biggest factors into improving quickly, but it's vital that you keep experimenting rather than doing the same stuff over and over again. Out of curiosity, do you use GIMP or PS? Either way, keep practicing. You'll get better.

I know you tried to keep it simple and clean, but that doesn't mean you can't experiment with gradient maps, photo filters, exposure, etc. As of right now it doesn't look like there are any effects. Text and lighting could be improved upon as well. This isn't the best example, but I did a quick 2 minute edit of what you have now. It's not a great example, but I'm just trying to show that you need to mess with the coloring a bit more. I used no stocks btw, but in this situation a nice lighting stock would make this really stand out.
