No matter what, you have to consider Lee a center because it's his primary position, and he's played it all season long.

1) Dwight Howard

2) Andrew Bogut

3) Andrew Bynum

4) Marc Gasol

5) David Lee

Gasol is almost putting up a double-double, and he also plays defense. That gives him the nod over Lee. Bynum would be putting up huge numbers, probably the second best center in the NBA, if he was the first or second option on another team. Bogut is playing solid basketball right now, and there's no need for me to explain Dwight.

I actually put a bit of thought in having Gasol up there. He's having a great year, but I just don't feel like he's made it far enough to officially be called a top 5 center yet. Though he is averaging a lot of rebounds, after comparing numbers, he's averaging about 36 mpg versus Noah's 31 and Kaman's 35. Not sure if that's a plus or a minus, but just for observation:

Gasol: 15 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 36 minutes

Noah: 10.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 31 minutes

Kaman: 19 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, 35 minutes

Lopez: 18.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 37 minutes

Horford: 14 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, 35 minutes

Lee: 20.7 points, 11.7 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, 37 minutes

I dunno, it's still tough to pick the last two spots for me. I don't consider Lee a center, even though that's his primary position while in New York. For 29 other teams he'd play power forward.

I think I'd still pick Noah as a top 5 minus Yao and Lee. He's become one of the best, if not the best, blue-collar guys in the league. His impact on the Bulls shows since their record has suffered extensively since his injury.

I'm a bit in question about Kaman, though. Him being a primary offensive option doesn't seem like a key to success, and he doesn't strike me as any sort of impact player defensively either. Lopez appears the same way for now, though that may change as he grows as a player.

Gasol is also the forth option on his team and he's playing alongside one of the best post players in the league in Zach Randolph so his points and rebounding numbers aren't as high. Gasol is also among the best passing big men in the league, the best passing center if you ask me.

That's the thing. He's a fourth option. It's hard for me to call a top 5 center a fourth option unless he has enough impact defensively to make up for it. It's more understandable for Bynum as a third option since he's playing with Kobe and Gasol, both of which are all stars and are at least top 5 for their own position. Marc's options ahead of him offensively are Gay, Mayo, and Randolph. Only Randolph was an all star and can arguably be considered top 5 in his position.

Gasol may be very efficient this year in terms of field goal percentage and overall rebounding, but does he really have enough in his skillset and overall impact as a player to truly be called a top five center in the league? Again, he's a fourth option on offense for a non-playoff team, and although he may be solid defensively this year, his impact on that end isn't enough to make up for his lack of top 5 offensive talent, at least in my opinion.

If Gasol was truly a top 5 center for his offense and rebounding, yet he's only the fourth option on his team, then the Grizzlies should easily be in the playoffs, even in the West.

He's the fourth option in one of the highest scoring starting fives in the league (maybe even the highest scoring). Few teams have 3 players averaging over 17 PPG. Even as the fourth option he's still averaging 15 PPG.

Gasol's passing is again a very underrated attribute. Part of the reason his PPG isn't as high is because he passes out of shots for himself for better shots for his teammates.
