XXL Class of '08, Where Are They Now?

It all started back in late 2007, when 10 select artists were co-signed by XXL as hip-hop’s next superstars, the leaders of the new school if you will, for 2008. But the world of hip-hop moves pretty darn fast and a lot can change in three years, so we figured we’d give you a brief rundown on where things stand with our Junior class. Some fumbled the ball, while others used the co-sign to the best of their ability to truly excel… or, more specifically, to XXL.

I expect the exact thing to happen to this year and last years list as well.

Joell Ortiz can spit and he's with Slaughterhouse so he gets a pass in my book. Plies has been on some pretty popular radio tracks since then and Saigon is as talented as any of those guys but hasn't gotten the recognition.

That's no one but Saigonsfault.

Joell and Crooked are pretty good, but Lupe is better than anybody thats came out in the past few years, possibly except for Jay Electronica.

<3 Lupe!!! I love that he raps about more than [expletive]es, money, and drugs! His lyrics are deep and have meaning, not to mention his flow is sick nasty gross! I also like Plies, just because he is the grimmiest rapper maybe ever, hahahaha

Ah, I cannot stand Plies. I can't tell you how many times before I stopped listening to the radio completely that I turned up a song with a beat that really hit hard in the car only to have to turn it down when Plies came in and started yelling his verse. Atrocious.

The hotest lyricist on that list is Saigon. Lupe is okay but would get murdered lyrically. Plies and Gorilla Zoe? Really?

Ok you're right.

Papoose is alright, he's got some decent [expletive] (Alphabetical Slaughter, etc.) but he has no major album to really gage is success on a major level.

lol @ everyone lupe's balls he iight but he's nothing special, not to mention the fact that he's got a bunch of people ghost writing for him.

Pap > Lupe

SMH.

Nobody's ghost writing for him and he would run circles around Papoose. NY-bias anyone?

Pap > Lupe

He's respected because he's PROVEN. Two excellent albums, and a mixtape series that is much better than anything Papoose has (or hasn't for that matter) put out.

what's so great about jay electronica? dude kinda bores me..

he's not bad but his [expletive] just doesnt blow me away

He reminds me of MF Doom, both are surrounded in mystery and both are at least decent producers as well as top-tier MC's. He's hard to explain, you just simply have to listen to his music to truly understand the guy. Just remember, if you like many of the guys on the past few XXL Freshman lists then you will not necessarily like Jay Electronica. I could see how you could feel that way about him being "boring", I might have felt the same way a few years ago when I didn't really pay attention to lyrics.

She said she never fell in love with a superman

Christian, Muslim, Protestant, Lutheran,

I told her that being a mortal is a portal to the true nature of growth; the Christ like Buddha man

That's why I never spit the traditional garbage of a night fight, bright lights, white ice to the fans

The radio is just a stereo, like a house and a home, a chair is just a chair, ask Luther Van

Go to work; go to church let your dreams die

Bow tie, final call, and a bean pie

yarmulke for Hanukah, wish list for Christmas

This is the jist of the life that we lead, why?

So you can fit in, with the close minded in the sit-ins, and clothes lined ed-end

I could care less about a plaque and Benz and get Punked on TV by my friends

Don't get a [expletive]a wrong, I get tempted by the rewards that all come along with [expletive]a songs

But what does it mean if I'm a Muslim and you a Jew and because of that alone we don't get along

And when you talk like this, and try to walk like this the radio stations'll never put a [expletive]a on

Just Mims, just 50, just Wayne, just Jeezy, Dem Franchize Boyz, and Jimmy Jones

[expletive] that, [expletive] rap this God-hop,

King-dom mu-sic for the hard rocks

Imma spit it till TRL get it and Hot97 hear the [expletive]a with a bomb drop

Ask Flex, ask Slay, ask Who Kidd

Just blaze said Jay is the new kid

I took Eternal Sunshine and I looped it

No drums no hook just new [expletive]

That's just a SAMPLING of what Jay provides in his writing. He excels at enlightenment, and does so brilliantly on each and every song. His versatility is another one of his strengths. Just download is discography if you're truly interested, and don't forget to BUY Exhibit C.

excellent albums lol? One was good, the other trash, lol Papoose's mixtapes were insane just because he hasn't released any great studio albums don't mean he's no better than Lupe.

To Flash, I know someone who ghostwrites for him.

Stop trolling dude, no one will take you serious if you do that. It's either that or you have no knowledge of hip-hop what so ever.

The fact is, I guarentee you haven't listened to even one of his albums with an ear for the lyrics. F&L was and is the best debut since The College Dropout. The Cool was easily the best album of 2008, and it was a CONCEPT album. Not to mention even before he came out with F&L he had the best mixtape series of the past ten years. But then again, that would take you actually listening to them before making a stupid comment like that.

I ain't trolling at all and I have listened to both albums in full, and I don't give a [expletive] if you don't believe me. Not only have I listened to both but I've also been to a Lupe Fiasco concert. The Cool was pretty good but Food & Liquor was trash and to compare it to College Dropout is a joke, and to say he has the best mixtapes is just a joke.

The only people trolling are you two calling me troll, I was just trying to figure why everyone loved Lupe then I was arguing Pap was better. However I guess neither you can argue that without personal attacks.
