Ray Allen Claims NBA Is 'A Lot Softer' Now

Celtics guard Ray Allen, a veteran of 13 seasons, remembers a time when a well-placed elbow was commonplace in the NBA.

Before Tuesday night's Game 2 between the Celtics and Heat in Boston, the veteran commented on the difference in the game today.

"The league is a lot softer," Allen said less than 72 hours after teammate Kevin Garnett elbowed Miami's Quentin Richardson in the final moments of Game 1.

Garnett was suspended one game for his actions in Boston's victory.

"The slightest little touch and you're at the foul line," Allen said of today's game. "It's like you have to be tricky."

Allen then gave a perfect example of how the NBA has changed over the course of his career.

"Reggie [Miller] would grab my hands and throw them one way while going the other way," he said, adding that he was expected by referees and coaches to defend such a move.

"That's what made guys so great at what they did."

well he's freaked out over hard fouls quiet a lot since he came into the league - of course his body can handle the old school toughness but mentally im not too sure

You're on a roll....keep firing at LeBron. And your man D-wade is so tough. It's always LeBron that's the bad guy.

Yes, LeBron is definitely soft. A guy that looks for contact the way he does is definitely soft. Because someone goes to the line a lot they are soft. I swear you guys will look for any little statement just to bash LeBron. It's getting kind of old. This is coming from a guy that doesn't like Lebron at all by the way.

LeBron is definitely not soft physically because he looks for contact more than anyone in the league next to Wade. Those 2 do an incredible job of drawing contact when they have the ball. However, I do understand what some people say about the whining about a hard foul and a perfect example is the Haywood thing. I don't know if I'd call it being "soft" but I get where they're coming from.

Anyone calling LeBron soft is honestly dumb. He cries for the call because that is the expectations that have been established by the refs... I Stern straight out came and said that the game would be called more lenient we wouldn't see the LeBrons, the Kobes, the Wades, crying for calls all the time. They are only yelling for the calls that are normally called.

LeBron is far from soft lol, I can't think of any stars that are 'soft'. If trying to get to the line by yelling for fouls makes you soft then I guess Wade and Kobe are soft as well.

The only reason they 'cry' about non-calls is because those are calls that are made 95% of the time. Or they are just looking for a bailout. All the best players talk to the refs after non-calls.

wade doesnt cry about gettin fouled hard, lebron does thats all im sayin..im not talkin about physical strength or gettin the to the line or who gets a certain number of calls and what not

you guys are bringing all that up

take that whole wizards series for example - bron was complaining about the wizards and their hard fouls

my first reply to this thread was a joke - lebron is not a bad guy and im not a believer of the conspiracy that refs never blow whistles against bron and always give him calls...he sometimes doesnt get calls BECAUSE of his strength

Chill, Dwyane puts on that face after he doesn't get a call he should've and that even gets me pissed when he does it. He's good about not being to dramatic about calls though which I like about him.

There is no difference between yelping at a no-call or talking to the ref after the play. All stars do one or both of those things.

EDIT: Save Celtics, all their players and coaches cry to the refs, not just the stars.

EDIT2: Co-sign what dude at the end of the video is saying.

I'm glad someone else said this because if it were me or any other Heat fan it would be, "You're only saying that because your team lost to them twice in a row."

What bothers me is that a topic is made about the NBA going soft, and this becomes a topic about LeBron. So he complains to the refs, so do half of the players in the NBA. No player gets fouled hard, gets a no call, and just walks away as if nothing happened. There going to complain about it somehow.

It was just a much better game back in the day. With all these rule changes that help out the guards, it becomes much easier for it to be a small mans game. Look at how the center position has deteriorated after all these rule changes, it hinders them from being effective. Allen is definitely right, the league is far softer now, id like to see some of the rule changes fixed to allow more physicality or I dont see LeBron not winning every MVP, especially with the way he (and other stars for everyone assuming this is just more LeBron bashing) get calls from the refs. Its a two way street imo, you give the offensive guy all the breaks for the most part, so defense is generally screwed over.
