I'm not sure if he was actually expected to step up. I think that would've been Beasley more than O'Neal.

 

JO was the second best player throughout the year, a higher field goal percentage, better overall efficiency, etc.

 

In the regular season, he played relatively well with 13.6 (53% FG, 72% FT) and 6.9 rebounds. Didn't quite live up to the "JO is back" hype, though, but still... at least it wasn't 4.2 points (20% FG, 43% FT), and 5.6 rebounds or anything.... oh wait, it was. That side just didn't choose to show up until it counted.

 

 

Beasley has been inconsistent the entire year, so him being a few points below his average wasn't too big of a surprise. O'Neal is a veteran, and had he played up to the standard he set in the regular season, the series may have gone a couple more games. Maybe the Heat would have won, who knows. 10 points per game is a big difference.
