ORLANDO, Fla. -- The NBA is investigating an incident between referee Joe DeRosa and a fan at halftime of Tuesday's Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals between Orlando and Boston.

DeRosa was walking to the scorer's table to get the warm-up jackets for his crew, a common practice before the trio of referees leave the floor at intermission. A fan behind the table approached DeRosa, gesturing with his arms and appearing to be shouting at the veteran official.

DeRosa flipped the game ball to the fan, who tossed it back. DeRosa then motioned for the man to be ejected by security.

The NBA had no immediate comment, other than saying it was reviewing the matter.

nothing should happen, refs take a ton of [expletive] from players coaches and fans. this shouldnt even been looked at twice, yeah he didnt handle it proper but put yourself in the refs shoes and i doubt this guy has any bad reputation to him. let it slide

He better get fined. If a player has any interference like that with a fan, he would get an automatic fine. The same principle should count here for referees as well. Refs get way too much special treatment in the NBA.

Did the fan actually get tossed out of the game?

Here's the thing: if a referee threw a ball at me, I would throw it back. What the hell do I do, otherwise? Keep it?

Both the fan and DeRosa were at fault. The fan needed to calm down (probably said a few personal things to DeRosa, maybe even more than that) and DeRosa was DEFINITELY in the wrong for throwing the ball at him (at him, to him, whatever...he probably told the fan, "Here, you do my job, then").

I don't see the fan being at fault at all, he paid a good amount of money for those seats and to enjoy a good basketball game. As a true fan, you get upset and yell at the refs. This guy just stood up for the entire organization, IMO he was the best fan in the entire arena.

Let is slide? Those are like 2,000 dollar seats, if you got tossed half time of a game where you paid $2,000 to sit in the seat would you let it slide? Fan should have kept the ball...

the guy didnt get thrown out though. the ref told security to get him but they didnt, again nothing should happen

HE THREW THE BALL AT A FAN.

How can you say that what he did doesn't deserve any type of repercussions from the NBA?

u make it sound like he pegged it at the dude, its just a ball, the guy caught it and passsed it back. i could imagine the ref said you do my job then.

nothing else happened the guy went his way (back to his seat) the ref went his (back to reffing).

Its the principle of what happened, not what actually happened. What if the guy had missed the catch, the ball hit him in the face, he slips, falls, breaks his arm, sues the NBA for a [expletive] load? The NBA has to take action.

lmao then that guys a dick head and should keep his [expletive] in his seat and stop trying to ref the game.

you can play the what if game all you like, fact it nothing even happened its pointless and wasnt serious

As stated before the fan paid good money to cheer for his team. Cheering for your team includes getting angry and yelling at a ref when he or she makes a questionable call. That doesn't give the ref permission to start throwing [expletive].

I guarantee you the NBA atleast fines him.

He can yell at the refs, just like every other fan does, but he was just closer to the court than most fans.

Also, the whole "nothing happened and it wasn't serious" argument is crap. You can't hand out suspensions based upon the injury, but you need to suspend based upon the action.

He should be suspended.

Personally, if he doesn't get suspended I'll be pissed.

I don't see the difference between this and Ron Artest charging the fans in Detroit in 04

Same, if anything Artest was less in fault because he was physically provoked not just verbally.
