Chicago Breaking News

The July 31 trading deadline is more than two months away, but one of baseball's best pitchers has asked to be put on the market.

Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt, a three-time National League All-Star, has asked owner Drayton McLane Jr. to be traded, a source said Friday.

Oswalt, 32, is in the fourth year of a five-year, $73 million contract that will pay him $15 million in 2010 and $16 million in 2011. His contract includes a $16 million team option for 2012 or $2 million buyout.

Oswalt, 32, posted 20-win seasons in 2004 and 2005 and has won 139 games with a lifetime 3.21 ERA in his 10-year career. Despite a 2-6 record, Oswalt has a 2.66 ERA for Houston while striking out 60 in 61 innings.

I heard he prefer the Braves, Cardinals, and Rangers. I'm not sure why he would want to be on the Braves though.

Sore loser. I hate when guys on losing teams request a trade. Stay with the franchise that has been loyal to you and you once went to a World Series with. I don't see Berkman or Lee requesting a trade and they are older than Oswalt.

He's pitched ten seasons for a team that is no longer (were they ever?) committed to winning. He deserves out, he's been a consummate pro his entire career and pitched his heart out for a club who didn't put pieces around him.

If you don't think that Berkman and Lee want out of there you're insane. Berkman is gonna be gone at the deadline and the only thing holding Lee back form being dealt is his contract.

I see the Yankees making a deal for Berkman at the deadline. He'd fit perfectly in the DH spot and the short fence in right field would be his new best friend.

If Nick Johnson's labia remains inflamed, I agree.

Nah, the Yankees can get anyone, all they have to do is pull out a billion dollars and be like "yah we got diz bangin ish"

So then how do you explain not coming to an agreement with Damon? Oh, right, you don't watch baseball.

I apologize, is it unrealistic for the Yankees to pursue a big DH bat at the deadline?

LOL, seriously. I'd be mad if we didn't go after him to be honest. He's got 1 year left on his deal and then who knows. He can also play the outfield if need be so he and Swish could be interchangeable.

Cuz Damon didnt feel like playin more years for a team he owned in that series when the Yankees were up 3-0 and lost 4-3.

Your best response with any relevance to this topic is a reference to something over five years ago and still hardly related.

Just like Waldo mentioned the Yankees went the cheap route this year letting Damon walk for a reason. Now you think not only are they going to pay Berkmans contract but now they are going to trade for him. What do you think the Astros are going to let him walk for free? Steinberner might have done it but Cashman is smart he will not destroy the farm system for a half year rental. So yes, the Yankees going after Berkman is very unrealistic, what happens to Nick Johnson in this situation?

Just because they let Damon walk doesn't mean they didn't have the money to pay for him, they just felt they had enough depth to cover his loss...

Well if they felt they had enough depth, I don't think they would have signed Thames and Winn.

Not depth in the outfield, depth overall as a team and as an offense

In both ways, the Yankees did not feel they were set. Hairston and Hinske left, and Gardner, at that point, still needed to show that he was ready to frequently start rather than his usual pinch-running role last year. Thames and Winn were brought in for more than fielding. There's a reason that the talks between the team and Boras went on for weeks before it seemed unlikely that Johnny would return. The reason that negotiations couldn't come to the finish line was money, not the FO's decision to be satisfied with what we had.

uhh....berkman already asked for a trade not too long ago

and your argument makes no sense. oswalt is 33 years old and he knows he isnt going to be in the league forever. he has played for the astros the past 10 years. he knows the astros arent going to be winning the world series anytime soon, so he decided that he wants to get traded to a team that has a chance. it is nothing new from players in similar situations, id be more surprised if he didnt say anything

with that said, i hope he goes to an AL team instead of the cardinals or someone like that

This.

Oswalt has been loyal to the 'stros long enough. The guy just wants a legit shot at winning a championship before it's over, and wanting that doesn't make him a sore loser IMO.

I don't think Berkman technically asked for a trade. He was chatting with a reporter and basically said "hypothetically, if I was the GM I would look to trade the guys like myself, Roy Oswalt, Carlos Lee, etc. and bring back as much young talent as possible". But of course the media took his words way out of context. Morgan Ensberg actually wrote a really good blog post about this, and about how the media does a great job misconstruing what players are actually saying (another FYI, if any of you haven't checked out Morgan Ensberg's blog, it is really really good and I recommend you check it out).
