Speculation: Mo Williams To Toronto?

Recommended Posts

Nothing serious, just some comment on Holly MacKenzie's Twitter that I noticed, and I don't even think much of it, but I thought I would post it anyways.

Trade talk involving Mo Williams mostly involves Toronto. Nothing serious at this stage. Delonte West is a goner for sure.

@stackmack All source said is Calderon's name is the one being mentioned for Raps. But again, seems like mostly speculation right now Holly.

If the trade was Calderon for Williams, I would do it without even thinking about it. It is debatable who the better player is (Williams is the better scorer while Calderon is the better point guard and both suck on defense) but Williams has the more favourable contract between the two.

Mo Williams

20010/11: $9,300,000

2011/12: $8,500,000

2012/13: $8,500,000 (player option)

Jose Calderon

2010/11: $9,000,000

@011/12: $9,780,993

2012/13: $10,561,985

The Raptors would save around $3M by making this trade, whcih isn't a lot, but considering they won't be sacrificing talent, it would have to be considered a smart move.

However, the question is, would this trade just be Calderon for Williams straight up, or would other factors be invovled?

Like I said above, this is purely speculation and I wouldn't even call it a rumor yet, but I figured I would post it anyways.

EDIT: Here is a non-Twitter link to more speculation about this. It basically says the exact same thing.

-- If the Cavs decide to trade Mo Williams, one possible destination could be Toronto in exchange for Jose Calderon. Williams is a more dynamic scorer and Calderon is more of a distributor. Both are great free-throw shooters, but neither player is a good defender.

Their contracts are similar in amount and length. The Raptors would like to move Calderon and swingman Hedo Turkoglu.

i really dont see the point, this team might as well try and get young as it could be a rough year coming up if Bosh jumps ship. if this were to happen, i would hope the raps wait to see what bosh is doing before comitting to that.

Getting Jose here could help in recruiting Bosh to Cleveland. I'm fine with any move at this point. I like Mo, but it's not like I'll go crazy if we lose him. Mo has this year's playoffs to prove that last year's horrific playoff run was a barrage for him. And well, he was just as bad this year despite LeBron also contributing to our demise.

As long as Andy, Jamison (who I think deserves a full year with us before we give up), and Z stay, along with LeBron, I could care less what happens.

This is pointless though if we don't have Bosh or Bynum next year tho.

Why? Williams is on a cheaper contract and it saves the Raptors some money. He could probably be flipped for another player at some point over the next 3 years easier than Calderon could as well.

Its not like Williams would be good enough to [expletive] up the Raptors draft position next year either.

There is always the possibility that he wants out of Toronto so bad that he doesn't pick up his player option for the 3rd year too, haha.

Williams for Calderon? Would work well for Toronto. That would give some improvement on the defensive end (though I suppose just about any PG would be). The biggest benefit I can see is that he is less ball dominant and is well accustomed to playing with a point-forward, which could help ultimately make more use of Turkoglu's strengths as a player.

On Cleveland's end, I don't see much reason to pull a trade like this.

It is a lateral move that would likely cost us our pick this year, if we can do it without giving up much else then okay, otherwise it is pretty pointless.
