Colangelo On The Hot Seat?

Recommended Posts

From Doug Smith's blog:

Q: Hey Doug, at what point do we hold Bryan Colangelo's feet to the fire? When will he be on the proverbial "hot seat"? In his defense (somewhat) he's never tried to do a re-build through the draft, I believe because of his initial success. Long question cut short(ish) if this off-season ends up with the Raptors coming out on the losing end will the big time decision makers allow Bryan Colangelo to try and re-build this team (through the draft or not)?

Bill V, Toronto

A: He’s on the hot-seat now. And it doesn’t matter how close you hold his feet to the fire, he knows what he’s up against and just because fans are clamouring for more success doesn’t mean he’s going to work harder. He’s worked to the best of his abilities since he got the job.

And if the Raptors go down in flames again this season with little appearance of improvement, I would imagine ownership might look long and hard at making a change.

If the Raptors are committed to rebuliding, I think it would be best if Colangelo is gone after this season when his contract it up. Colangelo has his strengths and weaknesses as a GM, but from what I have seen in Toronto, patience is not one of them and I can't see him having the patience to build a team through the draft, which is what I hope the Raptors do.

It is pretty funny though. Back when Colangelo was hired there wasn't one Raptors fan tha I knew of who was upset about it. Everybody was absolutely thrilled with the signing and now the majority of Raptor fans are thrilled about the possibility of him leaving after the season. Oh how things change.

It is Doug Smith though, and he isn't exactly the most reliable beat writer for the Raptors. Since he mentioned this I wouldn't be surprised at all to wake up tomorrow and hear that MLSE gave Colangelo a 4 year extension.

Considering the circumstances of being the Toronto Raptors GM, lack of players wanting to be here and lack of overall success the franchise has had, I think BC has been a really solid GM for us. Drafting Bargnani isn't as bad as people make it out to be since I am convinced Gay or Aldridge are jetting this off-season had we drafted them anyways. Overall the only horrific transaction he has made has been the Turkoglu signing, everything else was reversible and either minimal penalty or good reward, he just never hit that homerun transaction like he did in Phoenix with Steve Nash. Also if TJ Ford doesn't get his neck broken again, we probably aren't even having this discussion.

I don't think Brian deserves to be fired, but he needs to stop ignoring or being oblivious to his team's glaring weaknesses in Toronto. What is the Raptors record here during his tenure? Around the .500 mark? I think the problem with how BC has had to quickly build these teams lies more in MLSE than it does in him himself.

Brian's biggest weakness is his sense of money, does Bargnani get 10 million on the open market? Does Jose Calderon get 9 million on the open market? Would Ford have gotten the contract he did at the time on the open market? Was Jason Kapono really that high in demand for all that money? Besides Bargnani, all these contracts were pretty bad.
