Salmons to Officially Opt Out

John Salmons has told the Bucks that he will opt out of the final year of his contract and hit the free agent market.

 

Salmons helped lead Milwaukee to the postseason and a seven-game defeat at the hands of Atlanta in the first round.

 

"Free Agency 2010 sleeper alert: John Salmons has notified Milwaukee that he will be opting out, according to a source close to him," Sam Amick of FanHouse wrote on his Twitter page.

Good choice on his part, I wonder what he gets on the open market. I am guessing he is still probably getting the 4 or 5 year MLE at most... would be a good pick up for a middle of the pack team.

Perfect timing, really. Seems like half of the teams are willing to dive under the cap just to pick up a free agent, and truth be told, there aren't five or six LeBron's or Wade's...so a few teams are going to miss out and still have a TON of room.

Word is Hammond still wants to get a deal done with Salmons. Salmons won't file the paper work until the 30th to allow talks to continue. Initially Hammond was offering Salmons a fourth year, I wonder if that offer will still stand.

 

I'd love for us to be able to resign Salmons. It would allow Maggette to play the 3 and we'd still have the player that allowed us to spread the floor so well late last season. The chemistry with Salmons was great and he knew his role.

Following today's earlier trade that brought Golden State's Corey Maggette to the Bucks in exchange for Dan Gadzuric and Charlie, John Salmons stated that he will officially opt out of his player option worth $5.81 million next year.

 

Now is there a chance that the Bucks and Salmons are still able to agree on a multi-year year in the free agent market this year? Sure, although it doesn't appear to be likely.

 

After arriving in Milwaukee via a trade with the Chicago Bulls, Salmons was nothing short of spectacular. He lead the Bucks to an impressive 20-8 record in his short time here. Salmons averaged just under 20 ppg and over 4 apg while in Milwaukee.

 

What does this mean for Milwaukee? Assuming Salmons doesn't resign with the Bucks we will be losing an efficient scorer who was able to spread the floor. Down the stretch Salmons was as clutch as could be. Not only was he an efficient player but he knew his role well and did what was needed to win. Something that Salmons brings to the table that Maggette will not is that he is multi-dimensional in that he is able to shoot the three as well as cut to the basket at will.

 

If somehow a deal is reached between both parties, the Bucks will have solidified four of their starting five spots. A lineup of Jennings, Salmons, Maggette, Mbah a Moute, Bogut would be nothing to skoff at. That would be a team capable of winning any night.

 

The Bucks front office will stay in contact with Salmons until June 30 when he will officially fill out the necessary paper work.

 

Time will only tell if the most recent trade means the end of Salmons in Milwaukee.
