Check my Stats
This isn't as good of a trade for the Mavs as it may seem. You guys definitely need Dampier's low post defense. Dirk will not be an effective center at all, he needs to stay where he is at the 4. The "small" lineup mentioned before which has Dirk at center just wouldn't work out. Managing minutes between Redd, Terry, Marion and Howard could be conflicting. They just got Hump and Jawai from the Raptors, 2 big men, they currently have 6 big men under contract (if you count Marion who can play PF and Gortat). Trading Damp would leave them with a rotation probably of Gortat and Dirk starting with Hump off the bench probably with Marion getting run at the PF. Hump isn't a stud but he can give a few solid minutes off the bench. Or they can go small with Dirk-Marion-Howard-Redd-Kidd and have an amazingly deep bench. ALthough I don't think this is a legitimate rumour, the Mavericks would easily be owning this trade.

Dampier is a true center who is an above average defender in the league. Having Gortat as his backup is perfect. Marion at the power forward spot isn't a problem, but Dirk at center would be disastrous. He functions at an elite level where he is right now, as a power forward. His game would be entirely different if he played center. If this trade ends up going down, the Mavs will have to deal with two legitimate sixth men. PG: KiddSG: ReddSF: MarionPF: DirkC: Damp Sixth Men: Terry, Howard Balancing out minutes is going to be very tough for the team as well as frustrating to Redd, Terry, Marion, and Howard. Art
Considering Kidd has only a few years left, Cuban could be trying any and everything possible to make things work for Dirk.

Even though I agree with you when there is an all-star on the table for a role player at best, you take the deal. Worry about getting your rotational players later. They could deal either Terry or Howard for a VERY GOOD big man IMO.
YugoRocketsFan
Lol at Cavs trading their big expiring for Shaq when, if this is true, they could potentially have gotten Redd who is what they need right now imo. They got Anthony Parker lol. Hes a shooter.
Owner Real Deal Posted July 12, 2009 Owner Report Share Posted July 12, 2009 What's the status on Gortat? He's a good defensive center.

deestillballin
This season is going to be wikied with our without Redd. Mark has been hella busy this offseason and I dont think he is done...
Dash
Mavs have Gortat for center. If they get Redd then they're WCF bound. Got to give it up to Mark Cuban and the front office, terrific offseason. Edited July 13, 2009 by Dash

Check my Stats
They haven't signed him yet. The Magic might match. Even after they were part of a deal where Dallas got Orlando an 8 million trade exception?
Owner Real Deal Posted July 13, 2009 Owner Report Share Posted July 13, 2009 Diop is no longer with MavsI know. I was saying that he was actually the defensive center for Dallas, not Dampier.
OldChili
I think they could afford to make this trade, seeing as it's very likely that the Magic will not match the Mavericks offer for Gortat. If Redd can stay healthy, this would be a great trade for the Mavericks. Edited July 13, 2009 by OldChili
Cleveland's Finest
Lol...Mavs would be like the 04 Lakers with Malone, Kobe, Payton, Shaq, etc.....Redd and Howard could be such a dynamic scoring duo. Redd is a risk, but all they trade is Dampier? How does Milwaukee benefit at all...I thought they've already made cost cutting deals.
