Owner Real Deal Posted June 30, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted June 30, 2010 That really is a big deal. It was either the Hawks or Knicks for Johnson, and that six year max deal...man, that's tough to turn down. It would take LeBron going to New York to sway Johnson's decision, I believe. The Knicks would probably have to give him all the money they can, and the incentive would be that he gets to play with one of the best players in the league. magicbalala245
Joe Johnson is getting overpaid right hurr. The Hawks are screwing themselves over with this deal.
kingfish
I guess the Hawks are content with paying him as long as he leads them to 2nd round exits every year.
Cobb
I guess the Hawks are content with paying him as long as he leads them to 2nd round exits every year. I wouldn't even go that far. He played pretty bad in the playoffs this year.

Flash
I've read it like 4545 times and I still don't understand it. Ownership is fine with offering him this huge deal because they figure that they won't own the team by the time his deal ends meaning they won't have to pay it. Nitro
SIX YEAR MAX DEAL?!? Wow. The only thing that could make this better is if they work out a sign-and-trade with the Knicks and they get stuck with that horrible contract, and then they don't get LeBron/Wade/Bosh or Melo

Sun Tzu
I didn't expect the Hawks to throw this much amount of money at Joe Johnson. I mean he is good but I don't think he would be worth the Max contract for 6 years.
Cobb
The Atlanta Hawks were set to officially extend a six-year, approximately $120 million offer to retain free agent Joe Johnson at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, a person with knowledge of the offer told CBSSports.com. Such an offer would constitute the maximum-salary contract that the Hawks can pay Johnson.RealGM Sigh...

Flash
This will handcuff us for years to come. Pretty much. Do Bird Rights apply to the luxury tax? I find it hard to see how you're gonna keep both Smith and Horford as well as paying that absurd contract.

I find it hard to see how you're gonna keep both Smith and Horford as well as paying that absurd contract.I have no idea to be honest. And yeah, the last three years of his contract will control 32-40% of the cap all by itself. There is no way to build a team unless that player is named Kobe, LeBron, or Wade. Dash
A bit of an update. On Thursday night, Joe Johnson told the Knicks that the maximum-salary contract offer that the Hawks made him does not yet include a sixth season. "The key words are 'not yet,'" a Knicks official told Frank Isola.
