The Blazers will have $5.85 million to work with in free agency, thanks to the mid-level exception, and Mike Born, Portland's director of NBA scouting, says the team will focus on adding a point guard or shooting guard. The front office will be operating without a general manager for the foreseeable future, but Born said things have run smoothly since owner Paul Allen fired Kevin Pritchard on draft night. "We are going to keep trying to help this team get better, move forward and get ready for next season," said Born, who is handling the day-to-day basketball operations with Chad Buchanan, the director of college scouting. "We're going to be aggressive, be active. Obviously we're doing this under the watch of (president) Larry (Miller) and Paul. And we're working in conjunction with (coach) Nate (McMillan). But with free agents, we've been talking about these guys for months. It's not like all of a sudden this was thrown into our laps." Born would not reveal any specific offseason targets, but said the Blazers plan on exploring the trade market in addition to filling their mid-level exception through free agency. The team hardly possesses roster flexibility -- factoring in last week's three draft picks and a qualifying contract offer to restricted free agent point guard Patty Mills, all 15 roster spots are potentially accounted for. But both Mills and Armon Johnson, a second-round pick in Thursday's draft, are not guaranteed. And the Blazers also feature a combination of expiring contracts (Joel Przybilla and Andre Miller) and inexpensive young talent (forwards Jeff Pendergraph and Dante Cunningham) that should help on the trade market."---http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2010/06/trail_blazers_will_shop_for_fr.html
Newman
I hope they don't waive Patty Mills. Saw him playing with the Australian basketball team and I believe that he can flourish given the playing time.
