Sam Mitchell is returning to the NBA coaching ranks as the New Jersey Nets’ top assistant.

The former Columbus, Mercer and NBA player said he has accepted the Nets’ offer, bringing him back into the league for the first time since the Toronto Raptors fired him as their head coach in 2008. He did not disclose the details of the contract but said he expects to sign it by the end of the week.

Mitchell said he is eager to continue developing under the Nets’ new coach, Avery Johnson, who coached the Dallas Mavericks to the 2006 NBA Finals.

“I get to work with somebody I respect and in a place I can continue to grow,” Mitchell said. “I consider myself a young coach, and I have a lot of room for growth and learning. In my conversations with Avery, I think we will help each other out in a lot of different ways.”
