Legacy
Alright, revised pitching matchups: Tomorrow: Cole Hamels vs. Jonathan SanchezWednesday: JA Happ vs. Brad PennyThursday: Pedro Martinez vs. Tim Lincecum I don't think the Giants have officially announced that Penny is pitching on Wednesday but it's looking like he will.Yeah he is, sucks for you. Lincecum vs Pedro will be raw though.
Phightins
Apparently Taschner will be the only call-up for now. Charlie and Amaro want to wait for the minor league seasons to end before calling up anybody else. I heard that Anthony Gose (last year's 2nd round pick) might get called up despite never playing above low-A ball. He stole 75 bases in 125 games this season. One thing this team is lacking right now is a designated-pinch runner (last two seasons we have had Michael Bourn and Greg Golson) so it wouldn't be the worst thing. The kid is only 19 too so it'd be a cool chance for him.
Phightins
Check that, the person who reported that meant to say Quintin Berry, not Anthony Gose.
Phightins
Wow what a game. Cole Hamels has 19 straight scoreless innings. Think he has "figured it out"? Hmm. Very good sign.
Diesel
COLE [expletive]ING HAMELS [expletive] YEAH! He exposed The giants pathetic offense in this game. Great job by him. Hopefully we can bring out the brooms on these [expletive]ers.

Hopefully we can bring out the brooms on these [expletive]ers. No broom son, we'll win the game Timmy pitches. Hamels is real good though, impressive. Sanchez surprised me as well. Only allowing three hits and a run to one of the better offenses in the league.
Diesel
we'll win the game Timmy pitches. http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/3883/jaysonwerthorly.jpg Jayson Werth owned Lincecum. That was such a nice hit by him. Never saw anyone hit the ball that far up the left side of the upperdeck before. Phightins
The offense has been brutally bad. They are living on the solo homerun. Absolutely no "small ball" or hitting with RISP. Also JA Happ was scratched from today's start.

Phightins
Great...Happ is going to miss his next start. Also Scott Eyre has "sharp elbow pain" which is never good. I guess that makes Jack Taschner our primary lefty out of the bullpen for the time being...ouch. Also, I wonder what they will do with the rotation this weekend, with the double header combined with the Happ injury. My guess is Moyer will pitch at some point, as will Kyle Kendrick. Phightins
The offense is horrible right now. It's amazing how much they live and die with the solo homerun. They scored 5 runs tonight...5 solo homeruns. First time since 1991 that a team has scored 5 or more runs solely via the solo homerun (the A's scored 6 times on 6 solo homeruns in August of 1991). So I am happy they got the win, but the offense is a mess. To turn that into a positive, though, they now have 4 guys with 30+ homeruns (Howard-38, Werth-32, Ibanez-30, Utley-30). Twelfth time it's happened in MLB history and the first in Phillies history. I would also say that tonight was probably the final time this season that Brad Lidge sees the mound in a save situation. He loaded the bases with 1 out and Charlie went and got him. This is the first time that Charlie has not shown complete confidence. A week ago, Charlie would have let Lidge attempt to get out of his own jam. Tonight, he replaced him with Madson. Thankfully Madson struck out Zimmerman and got Dunn to ground out to seal the win. It is also worth noting that Brett Myers threw a very impressive inning and a third today. This is his third appearance since coming back and he has looked very good. I'm guessing that this means that Charlie has seen what he needs to see out of Myers and is going to make a change. Should get very interesting. Lost in all of the talk about the back of the bullpen and the offense is the fact that the starting rotation has been keeping this team afloat over the past 2-3 weeks. Pedro Martinez has been far better than any Phillies fan could have imagined, and he may be pitching himself into the postseason rotation, especially if Romero/Eyre are done in which case I think they may move Happ to the pen. Phightins
Andy Tracy and Sergio Escalona have been added to the active roster. Both fill huge needs. Matt Stairs is in an epic slump and Greg Dobbs is hurt, so Tracy fills that role of a masher from the left side to bring in off the bench if need be. And as I mentioned yesterday, our left handed specialist situation is not very good right now, so Escalona is needed.

He's probably done after this year anyway. Edited September 9, 2009 by Phightins09
Phightins
Wow that was a sloppy game. We were lucky to win. Also, Ryan Madson pitched the 9th for the save. I honestly think Myers will eventually be the closer, but he has pitched a lot the past couple days, so I'm thinking tonight was just a day of rest. Phightins
Pitching matchups for Mets series: Tonight: Cole Hamels vs. Nelson FigureoaTomorrow: Jamie Moyer vs. Mike PelfreySunday Game 1: Kyle Kendrick vs. John MaineSunday Game 2: Pedro Martinez vs. Tim Redding Apparently Andrew Carpenter was called up today, so maybe there is a chance he pitches the first game of Sunday's doubleheader instead of Kendrick. Who knows. Also, Scott Eyre is going to receive a cortisone shot in his elbow and will attempt to pitch the rest of the season in pain. Phightins
Brett Myers has to be the closer of this team. Ryan Madson has shown time and again that his niche is the 8th inning and for whatever reason he cannot handle the 9th. But mother[expletive]er this is so frustrating. This team is 20 games over .500 WITH 16 blown saves from Lidge/Madson. How good could they be? So goddamned frustrating.
Phightins
Kendrick was awesome today. Way more life on his fastball and he actually throws a decent changeup now. Looks like the season in the minor leagues did him well.

Diesel
YEAH PEDRO! Pedro absolutely anal raped the Mutts tonight. He wasn't letting them have anything. It was great to see Pedro find the fountain of youth against them considering that organization basically gave up on him. Owned. On another note tonight's win officially eliminates the Mets from the division race.
fish7718
Don't be so bitter! ? lol I don't see how that came off as bitter just saying I wouldn't judge the strength of a pitcher off his performance against these Mets. I was just messing with you. Pedro has honestly been great since we signed him though (with the one exception being his start up at Citi Field, where he wasn't horrible but certainly not good). I think he has pitched himself into the postseason rotation.
fly3rs18
the phillies are 7-0 in games that pedro starts. that is just crazy and he absolutely will pitch himself into the playoffs if he can continue to pitch even close to how he is now
