Philadelphia Phillies 2009!!

Everybody should be back. This team is in great shape for next year. The 2010 offseason will be the interesting one, since Cliff Lee, Jimmy Rollins, and Jayson Werth will be free agents, and they will have to seriously consider how to handle the Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels situations. Only thing that could happen this offseason is at third base. They have a team option for Pedro Feliz, and if they decide to go for more offense at third, they could let him go and try to get Dan Uggla, Chone Figgins, Garrett Atkins, or somebody else. Personally I hope Feliz sticks around. I could care less what he gives us offensively, we will not find a better defensive third baseman, and I think we can live with his offensive struggles with how deep this lineup is (and 82 RBIs out of the 7 hole is nothing to sneeze at, either). Also they will have to work out new contracts for Shane Victorino and Joe Blanton, but they are both under club control so they are not going anywhere. The bench will be retooled. It would not surprise me if Greg Dobbs and Ben Francisco are the only guys back from this year's bench (but they will need to work out a new deal for Francisco since he is still in arbitration). Francisco could also potentially be trade bait since I believe he could start for many MLB teams. Also, a couple questions in the bullpen, such as if Scott Eyre will retire, and also the closer situation. Chan Ho Park is also a free agent and obviously I'd love to bring him back. Also, the 5th starter's job will be up in the air. They will have to decide whether or not to bring Pedro Martinez back, but I doubt they will since they still have Jamie Moyer under contract for another year.

Only big shakeup I could see happening is if they decide to sell high with either Victorino or Werth. I would only do this if they could bring in an absolutely massive haul. The Phillies would have to be blown away with an offer, clearly. I do not want either of them to go since I believe they are both reaching their primes right now, but I would at least listen to offers and see if somebody offers something spectacular.

Other news...

Apparently Brad Lidge was pitching with an elbow problem for most of the season and did not tell anyone til now. He might have the same problem Scott Eyre has, which will probably require surgery. I have thought all along that he wasn't healthy.

Also, Brett Myers will not be back next season. Not really a surprise.

The National League champion Philadelphia Phillies have declined the $5.5 million option on its third baseman, Pedro Feliz, who served the team well with excellent defense and solid offense: He batted .266 with 82 RBI and 12 dingers.

Of course the team could still re-sign Feliz but GM Ruben Amaro Jr. and his gang will be looking into a few different options at third for 2010 that have a little more pop in their bats, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer: Adrian Beltre, Chone Figgins, and Mark DeRosa.

Rumor has it the team could also try long-time shortstop Miguel Tejada at third. He's a free agent and is supposedly open to playing third base.

I want either Beltre or DeRosa. Figgins will likely be too expensive and have too many other suitors. I wouldn't mind bringing Feliz back, and since I have a feeling there won't be much of a market for him we could possibly get him for very cheap, which is more than likely why the $5 million option was declined. I have a feeling it will be DeRosa since Ruben has made it clear he wants more versatility, but my first choice is Beltre.

Other things I want to see accomplished....

-Resign Chan Ho Park/Scott Eyre

-Sign one of Jose Valverde/Rafael Soriano/Fernando Rodney. I think Rodney is the most likely since Valverde and Soriano are both type A's and will result in a loss of a first round pick. He'd also be the least expensive, I'd imagine. Also I wouldn't be surprised to see them take a flyer on JJ Putz and give him a 1-year incentive-laiden deal.

-Find some versatility for the bench. Maybe an Alex Cora or Jerry Hairston Jr. type would be a good place to start.

-Sign a backup catcher. I'd suggest Bako but I have a feeling they want a right handed bat. There are plenty to choose from.

Not that I really value the gold glove too much, but Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino each won one today. However, I think they do deserve it. I think everybody who won in the NL deserves it, which is a change from the norm. Usually there is at least one glaring mistake.

Anyone know if we're going to re-up the core any time soon? Rollins, Howard, Werth, and Lee are all due for new contracts soon.

I am sure they are working on all four. I could potentially see them trading Werth next winter (or sooner), but I am sure they will work hard to get new deals for at least 3 of the 4. Howard will be the trickiest, but I'd say there is a better chance of him staying here long term now than I would have thought this time last year.

I like the Polanco signing a lot. Definitely an offensive improvement over Feliz. We now have a legit 2-hole hitter, which helps the lineup a ton. Obviously he will help the top of the lineup, but this will also allow the Phillies to slide Shane Victorino down to either the 6 or 7 hole where he will have more chances to produce runs, and also adds the speed dynamic to the bottom of the lineup which we lacked last year. I am predicting a huge year out of Victorino, for the record.

As for how Polanco handles the glove, he has not played third in a while so it will remain to be seen. He was very good when he played 3rd for us right after we got him for Rolen. I doubt he will be as sure-handed as Feliz but I don't think he will be Wes Helms/David Bell level.
