If MJ had been a free agent in 1990s (and if he had no ring, no Phil Jackson, and had played for crazy owner) and he had the opportunity to team with, say Karl Malone and Mitch Richmond back then, he would have done it.

hmm...but he didn't. he was the greatest of all time. only person to date to win rings without a dominant big man. even kobe's got gasol. sry dennis rodman ain't pau

Dennis could lock down Pau...

MJ was never in LeBron's position to choose. If he had the choice... if he had no ring like LeBron, if he had no coach (Mike Brown was fired), MJ would have teamed with two of the best players in his era too. It's a no brainer.

I never said he wouldn't...but isn't that rather irrelevant now? The guy won 6 rings...

Pippen was a good player, very good...but one reason he was so good was because of Jordan. Having a big man is much more key then having a good swingman. Therefore, Pau ismore valuable (especially the post-soft Pau Gasol) then Scottie Pippen to winning championships...

I was tempted to agree with you but this ego maniac would have never teamed with a player of a Karl Malone calibur. Jordan's ego forced him to be the spotlight on that Bulls team for years. Have you ever thought that Lebron's motive was to join the echelon of MJ asap? Everone wants to measure a player by championships. Maybe Lebron is fed up with not getting full credit for his talent and statistical accolades.

Just because MJ could do it without a good big, does not mean he would not have done it had he had the opportunity.

Malone was a beast back then and if Malone had said, "you and me and Reggie Miller will be a free agent... we're all ringless (assuming MJ had no ring)... let's go to New York, we still take max each, and do this..." MJ would have said no?

But it didn't happen. We can keep saying all the if's but the fact of the matter is that situation never arose. lol.

The idea of the thread was to discuss how even Jordan, who's opinion should obviously be held highly, thinks Kobe is the best right now.

Theres really no point in discussing wether or not MJ would have gone to play with another top 3 player.

He never restructured his contract because he always wanted to stay in Chicago and lead the team to a title, and he did have some losing seasons also before winning a ring. Lebron had back to back 1st seed seasons and bolted, he made sure a few years ago that he would have the opportunity to bolt and play with one of his competitors.

That's why he had never been in LeBron's situation and for people to say "MJ would have never done what LeBron did" is naive.

I'm also assuming MJ said Kobe is the best (which I agree that Kobe is the best) is because of LeBron's decision. The timing is suspect... he could have said this (Kobe vs LeBron) last month, a year ago, but why now after LeBron's decision? Is it because MJ views LeBron as less now that he chose to play with 2 superstars vs. trying to win alone? My point is he would have done the same if he could team with two of the best players in his era. Like the top 5-10 players at the time.

I remember he was astonished by Shaq's size when Shaq came to the L. He would have teamed with Shaq too had the opportunity presented.

Scottie was nice, but he was no Karl Malone nice, or the clear-cut HOF players in that era.
