Magic: LeBron followed Kobe/KG trends

Magic Johnson was recently on ESPN the other day. This is what he said on the program.

"What he saw (Lebron) was the Lakers with Gasol, and he saw Boston and Garnet and Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, and he said,"Oh wow maybe that's the trend today, Let's go with the trend, of what's going on" so you can't knock him for that, you just have to say that's what he wanted and let's see what happen, and I think everybody though he was going to be with Chicago or NY"

What do people have to say about this. I completely agree. Kobe was demanding trades left and right when he realized he can't get past the first round without a top 3 bigman. Then Gasol comes in and he's happy again. Virtually the same situation with LeBron. You need another star to win and Mo Williams isn't going to cut it.

LeBron was winning 60+ games a year, he had a supporting cast. Kobe didn't leave nor did he join 2 other superstars. Gasol wasn't on the Lakers to start the 2007 season.

The quote says nothing about Kobe

Got a link? There are several misspellings too, which makes me question the validity. Ray Allen was sent to Boston against his will.

Its true you do need good teammates to win a title.

That doesnt mean you go join another team where someone else is clearly the leader, and someone whos arguably better then you.

Does anyone think Wade is better than LeBron as an overall player though? When your a FA thats the possibilities you have. I'm sure Kobe would've left that one offseason if he was a FA, but he was still under contract..

How about Magic playing with Kareem who was better than him in those first few years. Magic was only going to go pro if he got to play with Kareem. Or how about Kobe demanding to be traded to the Lakers since he didn't want to play for a Hornets franchise that didn't have nearly as much talent. I'm sure you think nothing of those though.

Yeah nice supporting cast. Does anyone really think the Cavs will be making the playoffs this year? LOL From 60+ wins to lottery. That's the impact LeBron James makes.

I copied the quote from someone on RealGM, it was on ESPNews. The

Kobe was a FA in 2004. Didn't leave. Toyed with signing with the Clippers to get more money out of it, but he obviously wasn't going to sign there(and he would have been ridiculed by EVERYONE if he signed with the Clippers).

WAIT WAIT WAIT. KOBE DEMANDED A TRADE FROM CHARLOTTE? HOLY [expletive], ARE YOU A JOKE ACCOUNT? MAGIC GOING PRO ONLY IF HE GOT TO PLAY WITH KAREEM?

hello there, PFG

There's a large difference between Kobe and Gasol teaming up as opossed to Wade and LeBron teaming up. Wade and LeBron are superstars, Kobe and Gasol are 1 all star and 1 super star. Using the same logic:

Allen/Pierce/Garnett 0 super stars 3 all stars

LeBron/Wade/Bosh 2 super stars 1 all star

If LeBron brought went to Chicago or NY with Boozer n Rose or Amar'e there would be no problem, but no he went and team up with a super star.

2004 Kobe was a happy camper. That is until the NBA season started and he realized he isn't going to win anything without a top 3 bigman. He demanded his trade in the 2007 Offseason after he got owned by the Phoenix Suns in the first round for the second consecutive year. Luckily there is a team in the NBA named the Memphis Grizzlies who gift wrapped LA two Championships.

Yes Kobes agent said it was an impossibility that Kobe ended up playing in Charlotte. As a Laker fan you should know that.

And yes one of the reasons Magic declared for the draft that year was because he was the unanimous first overall pick and would've went to the Lakers to play with Kareem.

"Johnson was drafted first overall in 1979 by the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson said that what was "most amazing" about joining the Lakers was the chance to play alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,[18] the team's 7 ft 2 in (2.18 m) center who became the leading scorer in NBA history. "

Pau Gasol is certainly a "superstar" in my book. He is a top 3 bigman in the NBA. I'm not sure of your definition of superstar, but he fits the bell. KG was DEFINETLY a superstar in 2008 too. Allen/Pierce are debatable. They are both first ballot HOFers who were still playing at a high level.

Also what is the whole fascination of teaming up with superstars? Honestly just seems like a bunch of jealous fans that LeBron is going to dominate the NBA Championship trophy for the next decade. Jordan played with Scottie freaking Pippen who is a better player than Dwyane Wade and Rodman>Bosh.

lol your first paragraph is very captain obvious. i don't understand your debate. Where did Kobe demand a trade from Charlotte? Kobe stayed with LA even without a bigman because they didn't get Pau right away.

As for the second one, where does that indicate that Johnson wouldn't have gone pro otherwise?

^^^^ its from wikipedia. I tried looking for a "Kobe demands trade from Charlotte" article but no luck. Only site that says anything close to it is wiki. And I agree that part about Magic says nothing about him declaring if it guaranteed him a chance to play to Kareem.

The first guard to ever be taken out of high school, Bryant was chosen as the 13th overall draft pick by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996.[25] However, according to Arn Tellem, Bryant's agent at the time, Bryant playing for the Charlotte Hornets was "an impossibility".[26] However, Bill Branch, the Hornets' head scout at the time, said that Hornets agreed to trade their draft selection to the Lakers the day before the draft. The Lakers didn't tell the Hornets who to select until five minutes before the pick was made.[27] Prior to the draft, Bryant had worked out in Los Angeles, in which he scrimmaged against former Lakers players Larry Drew and Michael Cooper, and according to then-Laker manager Jerry West "marched over these people".[28] On July 1, 1996, West traded his starting center, Vlade Divac, to the Hornets in exchange for Bryant's draft rights.[29] Since he was still 17 at the time of the draft, his parents had to cosign his contract with the Lakers until he was able to sign his own when he turned 18 before the season began.[30]

I don't see how Kobe demanded a trade when the Lakers made the pick essentially according to wiki

You can't tell me Gasol is the reason the Lakers won the championship. He's no superstar...maybe a borderline all-star. The team Kobe was on when he was demanding trades would have been a lottery team without Kobe.

Miami was D-Wade's team, and Chris Bosh joined him, which was enough for Miami to rise near the top of the East. I wasn't around on OTR to say this, so here it is. LeBron ruined his legacy by going to Miami. Had he have won a title in Chicago, New York, or Cleveland, people would've started comparing him to MJ or Kobe as the greatest ever. Now, even if he wins five or six rings, it's not much of an accomplishment. Udonis Haslem will win those rings too.

He was pretty much as good as Kobe was in the finals lol.... if they don't get that bailout deal from Memphis Kobe isn't a Laker right now and Celtics have 2 titles.

And if the 'trend' is wanting to play with good players, which Magic seemingly is making it sound like, then yeah LBJ is definitely following the 'trend'.

Kobe would have stuck around. Bynum had broken out and he had no reason to leave since he already stuck around. The Lakers also gave up Marc Gasol, something you seem to have forgotten about

Kobe might have stuck around..who knows..but what hes trying to say is that we wouldn't have those 2 rings if it wasn't for the Pau acquisition..which is pretty much true.

Can't disagree with you there. I guess what I'm saying is Kobe is the reason the Lakers are so dominant, not Gasol. But every superstar needs another great player to win it all. LeBron could've had Derrick Rose or Amar'e...but he screwed up his career by going to Miami.

i wouldn't say career, i'd say more-so his legacy.
