Risks/Rewards for keeping Arenas

We did this on a Wizards fan forum, and it was a very interesting concept with many new thoughts/ideas being brought up to further prove why Gil should or shouldn't be moved.

 

If we keep Gilbert Arenas....

 

Risks:

-We keep that huge contract, worsening our chances of possibly landing a big time FA in the future

- Undermine John Wall's role on the team

- If he gets injured again or causes another big problem, we're screwed.

- Takes minutes away from other young players such as Nick Young, Cartier Martin, etc.

 

Rewards:

- He could return back to form, and could help us get to the playoffs.

- He complements John Wall well, and becomes a great running mate for him in the backcourt.

- Helps John Wall progress as a point guard.

- Becomes a mentor to John Wall.

 

Go ahead and name some yourself. I just summarized some of the main points listed on the Wizards forum.... Which outweighs the other? In the end, will the Wizards be thankful for not trading Gil, or will we completely regret it in the future?

I think the Wizards should try and keep Arenas because he's still a solid player and I'm sure he could come back to his old form and be as good as he was before with some practice and determination. I'm not sure if it's going to undermine John Wall's role on the team because I think Wall is going to become the leader and Arenas will have to accept it. Arenas could still produce and even though he has a huge contract it's always good to have a player like him in your team. They will put Arenas as a SG and John Wall as a PG. That will make the Wizards back court a beast one

The only concern for their chemistry to work on the court is if Gilbert ACTUALLY accepts the secondary role to Wall. Something tells me that no matter how many times he may tell the media in the future that he is fine with not being the leader anymore, something in his head is going to make him act like the leader on the court and take away from Wall's game. It's hard to accept a lesser role after being the face of a franchise for multiple years, especially when you have to lessen your role for a rookie.

I think Washington should just put an end to the Arena's era.

 

He'll say he'll take a secondary role, but then you'll see him take 20+ shots a game. Right now, it's Wall's time and they should be putting pieces around him that will compliment him now and in the future..and I personally don't really think Arenas fits into that description.

I don't see any rewards in keeping him to be honest. Even if he regains his old form, the Wizards ceiling with him as a core player is a first round exit.... play him and hope he regains form simply so you can deal him. He won't help Wall become a better PG at all lol, if anything the effect would be the opposite.

The risks he brings outweigh the benefits of keeping him, mainly because I want this to be John Wall's team. But...knowing that we wouldn't get a fair deal for him, I'd rather take those risks and just hope that he understands that he's not the face of the franchise anymore, but he could still be a star and a fan favorite if he has the right mindset about it. Also, he's still relatively young, especially since he hasn't player in like two or three years now, so he could still be part of our future.
