What grade would you give the Lakers off-season?

They replaced everyone on the bench except for Luke and Sasha.

Farmar/Blake

Brown/Vujacic

Vujacic/Barnes

Odom/Odom

Powell/Ratliff

They still have Luke, Ebanks, and Caracter off the bench.

B, they added no star or improved their lineup but improved their bench. They got a bit better with that and should have a more flexible bench.

What did you expect them to add add? Lebron?

They did what they had to do, they had a very solid draft, they got an upgrade at the PG position (who happens to be a great fit in the triangle), and they are still looking to improve the bench. For a team that just came off a 2-peat, I'd say this has been a very successful off season.

No? I just explained why I rated them a B

A-

Blake is going to be a great fit. He gives us defensive intensity at the one, a point that can make the post entry pass, and someone that can knock down shots as well...exactly what we were looking for.

Caracter is amazing for being nearly the last pick in the draft. His post play is very solid, and I'm happy with what he can do on the glass as well. First-round material.

Ebanks is a poor man's Ariza. I like that. Even looks like him, in a way...haha. Another first-round pick that was selected in the second.

Barnes and Ratliff give us defense at positions we need it.

We let Farmar go...and that's a good thing. He was a bad defender, poor decision-maker in the triangle, and belongs in an uptempo system that lets him run up and down the floor as if he were in Phoenix.

Can't say I'm disappointed.

Before the Lakers started the offseason I said they need to:

1) Retain Phil Jackson

2) Upgrade their PG position

3) Find veteran backups at the wing and bigman position

4) See if they can pull off the Bynum-Bosh deal.

Well, they signed Phil to a one year extension despite his thoughts of retirement. They managed to sign Steve Blake for less money than he would have taken elsewhere, and they got solid defensive back ups in Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff.

Unfortunately, they weren't able to snag Bosh, but that may have been outside of their control. Still, they secured all the main objectives, and made the right moves without having to make any sacrifices. Deserves an A, IMO.

I give them an A just because of Blake coming to the Lakers. Lakers needed a point guard so badly it's been like 2 years we've been talking about it and now here we go. Lakers got Steve Blake and I'm sure he's going to help them big time with his 3 point shots and good court vision. He will open up the court and maybe leave more space for Kobe to knock down his own shots.

Barnes is also a good signing for the Lakers. He will surely help LA off the bench and give rest to Artest

Why is everyone saying Blake is this good defender? He played for the Nuggets and I can say first hand, he's average. He's not bad, but he's not good. He's more like Steve Nash on defense than Kirk Hinrich...

So please, this "Blake playing good defense" is nothing but out of wild imagination.

Ty will roast him next season :)

Blake has been a good defensive player since college, honorable mention All-Defensive team in 2000.

In 2009...

Blake had a defensive rating of 110 and allowed an opponent PER of 15.0

Andre Miller had a defensive rating of 110 and allowed an opponent PER of 17.9 (2.9 worse)

Steve Nash: 115 (5 worse then Blake)...opponent PER of 18.2 (3.2 worse)

Chris Paul: 103 (7 better)...opponent PER of 17.2 (2.2 worse)

Deron Williams: 111 (1 worse)...opponent PER of 17.3 (2.3 worse)

Tony Parker: 107 (3 better)...opponent PER of 16.7 (1.7 worse)

Jameer Nelson: 103 (7 better)...opponent PER of 15.7 (0.7 worse)

Chauncey Billups: 110...opponent PER of 18.3 - estimated (3.3 worse)

Mike Conley: 111 (1 worse)...opponent PER of 17.4 (2.4 worse)

Blake's problem is mental. That will change with Phil Jackson. Plus, a change in defensive strategies will help Blake as well. LA is one of the best defensive teams in the NBA, and has gotten better with the additions of Matt Barnes, Theo Ratliff, Devin Ebanks and possibly a healthy Andrew Bynum (and of course, Steve Blake).

He's a good defender, not a great one. He's a 6/10. That's as good or better than most point guards in the league. Nash has been sitting at rock bottom (zero) for his entire career, so don't compare the two.

Ty will roast him next season :)

Yes, we all know.

I find it odd when people say Steve Blake isn't a good defender. Every time I've watched him play, I've always been rather impressed with his defensive play. No, he's not spectacular on that end by any means, but he gets the job done. Surely an upgrade to the aging Derek Fisher.

He's pesky, and while he's not as thick and strong as a prime Billups, Blake is a physical defender. He's not Hinrich, but when people actually look at Kirk, they probably don't see a defensive specialist.

And yes, Blake is a good defender, which is three times the defense we get from Derek Fisher.

B+

The addition of Steve Blake is pretty self explanatory, he's a good passer, solid defender, and he gives us the much needed three point shooting. He's a poor mans Kirk Hinrich.

I was really surprised Barnes opted to take a pay cut and sign with us. He not only gives us a solid wing defender but he can also knock down wide open shots and is excellent as crashing the boards.

I don't know to much about Ebanks and Caracter, but alot of Laker fans have been praising them so I'm assuming that they will probably be an intricate part of our gameplay come next season.

If we manage to resign Shannon Brown, then I'll bump them up to an A-.

A, we did what we had to do. Retain Phil and Fish, find a PG that can fit the Tri and play some defense, find a back up hard nose defender for Ron (Barnes) and get a Bynum back up with experience and defensive skills. We didn't do MORE than what we needed to, we did WHAT we needed to.
