Forward Tim Thomas will visit the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, and his agent said Monday he expects the sides to reach an agreement on a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum.

Thomas, 33, played just 18 games with the Mavs last season before leaving the team to be with his ailing wife. He never disclosed his wife's illness, but she is apparently doing well enough for Thomas to return to the league. Both sides handled last season's situation in good faith and want to continue the relationship.

I wondered where this guy went last year. I still think he's a decent role player and given that the Mavs really only have Caron, Marion and Dirk as their forwards he can get some PT at times.

Thomas won't return after all:

Thomas has informed the team that his wife's illness, which took him away from the club last season, will prevent him from playing a 14th NBA season, Thomas' agent Bob Myers said Tuesday.

...Mavs officials declined to comment as they work with the league to void his contract. He had signed for the veteran's minimum of $1.35 million.

Brian Cardinal, Bobby Simmons and Steve Novak are rumoured to be the candidates to replace him.
