EastCoastNiner
Who do you think is the best defensive player in the NFL today? Which player would you take if you had the chance to choose one defensive player? I think it's obvious that in today's NFL, the most important position is a pass-rushing OLB, which is why I would choose DeMarcus Ware. I think you can find much more depth with CB's than you can with an elite pass-rusher. I know a lot of people will probably say Derrelle Revis or Patrick Willis, but I think Ware's impact on the game is greater than those two. I think Willis has a good chance at winning DPOTY this year and for years to come with the 49er's current defense, but elite MLB have less effect on games in general than and elite pass rusher. And, I just don't like Derrelle Revis. He's a whiny little [expletive]. .
Make It Naaaashty
I would take Patrick Willis over DeMarcus Ware any day.

The Great iBoldin
Lots of options. Ware, Jared Allen, Elvis Dumervil, Willis, Jon Beason, Scrabble, Revis, Charles Woodson. I'm actually going to say Jared Allen. Gets his double digit sacks, and he's tremendous in both pass rushing and run support. He's a superb anchor against the run. EastCoastNiner
A prime http://www.leatheregg.com/photos/2006/urlacher-2.jpg A prime Ray Lewis was ten times the player that Urlacher ever was. He's probably the most over-rated defensive player in the past ten years.

SRV
I love Ed Reed, not only is he a great defensive player and leader, but when he gets the ball he looks to score, not run forward a few yards then run out of bounds.
fish7718
I'd go with Revis, he makes that Jets defense what it is.

EastCoastNiner
GOAT safety and arguably overall DB. Having no bias whatsoever, you won't find too many people who agree with that because that honor belongs to Ronnie Lott. I know you're a Miami U fan, and Reed went there, but he still has to play at a high level for the foreseeable future. He has a chance at becoming the greatest possibly, but he's not there right now. I know you're a Miami U fan, and Reed went there, but he still has to play at a high level for the foreseeable future. He has a chance at becoming the greatest possibly, but he's not there right now. Ronnie Lott agrees with me: “Here’s where Ed Reed is better than I was or better than Kenny Easley or better than any safety who played the game. When he gets his hands on the ball after making an interception, he is no longer a defensive player running with the ball. He is an offensive player. It’s not just that he’s fast or quick, he knows how to run once he has the ball. He knows how to set up his blockers and he knows what moves to make. It’s like he’s Barry Sanders running with the ball.” “He is a good hitter. He can really strike. Maybe I hit a little bit harder but it’s not like Reed is deficient in that area. He plays the run well. He tackles and he can cover. But what separates him from everybody who has played the position is his ability with the ball in his hands. “I really take note of it because it was something I wanted to do when I was playing. I wanted to make the moves Reed does when he has the ball. I couldn’t do that. He can." “I don’t think Ed Reed has to take a back seat to anybody who ever played the position. ANYBODY.”
EastCoastNiner
Ronnie Lott agrees with me: What would you expect him to say? . He was never a cocky or arrogant player. He said what was politically correct. Ed Reed has a chance to be considered the "greatest", but he's sure as hell not there yet. Ronnie Lott made eight 1st -Team All Pro teams, and Ed Reed has four. There is a chance that Ed Reed surpasses Lott, but it's tough to say considering his health. I don't think "greatest" and "best" are the same thing. One has four Super Bowl rings. EastCoastNiner
What makes him not the GOAT? What do you want to compare? The amount of Pro-Bowls, First-Team All-Pro selections, Super Bowl rings, Lott's HOF selections(Reed will be there too), or unanimous rankings with Lott #1? Ed Reed still has time to catch up, but to say he's on that level right now is somewhat absurd. If someone plays for the U, you'll say they're the best at their position. If you said Ray Lewis was the best LB of all-time, I wouldn't disagree, but calling Reed the best safety at this point in time is going overboard. Reed's also never played on a team a talented as Lott's 49ers since college either so the SB rings will never be the same. Lott was a better tackler that's for sure, but Reed is a game changer and his ball skills are up there with Deion in terms of DB's. I don't think a safety has ever scared QB's the way Reed has. I know what you are saying. If you put Reed back in the 80's, he sure as hell would probably dominate just as much as Lott did. That is where "best" and "greatest" differ. Also, Lott led the league in INT's multiple times as well I believe, and if not, I'm positive he led at least once and finished 2nd once as well.
