Report: Bengals 'Ready to Release' Antonio Bryant

8/26/2010 3:50 PM ET By Chris Burke

The four-year, $28 million contract that Antonio Bryant received from the Bengals in March looked excessive at the time. It looks even worse now. Bryant has yet to suit up for Cincinnati in the preseason while dealing with a lingering knee injury, and there are a growing number of rumors that the Bengals may just cut the ailing wide receiver.

The latest comes courtesy of Newsday's Bob Glauber, who cited a league source as saying that the Bengals are ready to release Bryant.

Keep in mind that, as part of his contract, Bryant received a signing bonus in excess of $7 million. Cincinnati would have to eat that money if it shoved Bryant back onto the free-agent market. NFL.com's Jason La Canfora reported earlier that the Bengals could pursue an injury settlement with Bryant because of his knee -- the Bengals would have to pay a chunk of the remaining guaranteed money promised Bryant ($10 million total), but he'd be free to find another team.

Cincinnati could also opt to place Bryant on the injured reserve -- he's not eligible for the Physically Unable to Perform list because he passed a physical (somehow) at the start of camp -- and end his season.

Otherwise, Cincinnati just has to sit tight and wait for Bryant, now a very expensive third or fourth receiver, to get healthy. He's already behind Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens on the depth chart, and the Bengals have been impressed by youngster Jordan Shipley, while guys like Matt Jones and Andre Caldwell are also in the mix. Long story short, even if Bryant can get close to 100 percent, there might not be a spot for him in the lineup.

Bryant had a big 2008 for Tampa Bay: 83 catches for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns. He fell off last year, though, with just 39 catches for 600 yards, and spent much of the season complaining about his injured knee.

That didn't stop Cincinnati from rewarding him with a huge deal. But that's looking more and more like a colossal mistake.
