FT shooting consistency

Recommended Posts

What's your secret to being a good consistent FT shooter?

For me it's just a regular 3 ball bounce with both feet slightly tilting to the left.

When I release, I paw the ball with all 5 fingers, with a tight grip. I try to release with pretty much only my fingers touching the ball, the bottom of the hand not so much. and trying to have a medium arc to it in the air.

what about you?

It's all about a smooth release. When my release is smooth and I'm not thinking too much about aim, it goes in. When I'm just about to release the ball and question the dynamics of the shot, the release is jerky and won't go in.

As for my technique, I keep my right foot on the line with my left foot about a foot behind it, I take two dribbles, spin the ball and release.

Right foot at the center of the FT line, left foot slightly back - both pointed straight ahead. I bounce the ball twice and roll it in my right hand for my routine. I then simultaneously bend my knees slightly, straighten my back, cock my right wrist back, put my left (guide) hand on the side of the ball, put the ball in my shooting pocket (my shooting arm in a right angle with my elbow on my hip), and look directly at the rim. I bring the ball up to the side of my head (arms still in a right angle, elbow tucked in), straighten my knees with my heels up, straighten my arm, and flick my wrist with my guide hand pointed towards the rim and my middle finger pointed down inside the hoop as I swish the shot - all in a fluid motion.

While I shoot, I don't think. I don't worry about making or missing the shot, my form, the score, the crowd, where I need to be after shooting - nothing. My mind is basically blank when I shoot. For some reason, I shoot much better that way.
