Bucks Add Ilyasova

Recommended Posts

The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to terms with power forward Ersan Ilyasova on a deal worth almost $7 million over three years, according to Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Ilyasova was drafted by the Bucks 36th overall in the 2005 NBA Draft and played for the team for two seasons. For the past two years he has played with Regal FC Barcelona in Spain.

The contract calls for a first-year salary of $2.1 million. That gives the Bucks a total of salary commitments of over $66 million already for the 2009-10 season. They can still cut $2 million off that number if (most likely when) they waive forward Bruce Bowen by August 1st.

Why does that matter? Because the Bucks would ideally still like to keep restricted free agent point guard Ramon Sessions, and they have been told they are not going into luxury tax territory. As it is now if they sign Sessions – or sign-and-trade Sessions – avoiding the luxury tax could be difficult.

That might lead some team to make a MLE (or more) offer to Sessions, knowing that if the Bucks matched it they would become a team paying the tax. Keep an eye on this, because the signing of Ilyasova just drew some lines in the sand with regards to what will and won't happen with Sessions.
