The Perfect Role Player?

Well, ideally the perfect role player is someone that hustles his [expletive] off, is proficient in at least 2 skillsets (tends to usually be defense and 3pt shooting for perimeter players, and defense and rebounding for big men), and will not cause a stir if he isn't getting utilized in a way that he feels he should be. He should also be smart and not making careless plays too often.

The problem with identifying that player in today's league is that many of the elite teams are STACKED, with players that could be #1-2 options on other teams being #3-5 options. However, if I had to pick one player who everyone would agree is a role player, it'd be Udonis Haslem. He never worries about shot attempts, loves his city and team, never tries to go outside of what he does well, will always hustle his brains out, and is proficient at rebounding/defense/midrange jumpers.

UD FTW

Shane also gets a vote from me, as well as Raja Bell, Shane Battier, Luis Scola, Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, Kendrick Perkins, Kirk Hinrich, Mike Miller, Grant Hill, Thabo Sefolosha, Tayshaun Prince, Omri Casspi, Andre Miller, Aaron Afflalo, Anthony Parker, and Nicholas Batum.

And to add another dimension to this thread, I've also noticed Tanisha Wright, DeWanna Bonner, Shalee Lehning, and Janel McCarville.

I just realized my response didn't exactly correspond to what the thread is asking for. Instead of giving you the best role player, I gave a list of role players that deserve recognition.

The perfect role player IMO goes to DeWanna Bonner. She is primarily an SF and comes off the bench for the Phoenix Mercury. She is 6'4'' and only 140 pounds (which would be like being 6'10'' and 190 pounds for an NBA player). She can defend all 5 positions on the floor, and is the best perimeter defender on her team and the second best rebounder. Offensively she can shoot the three, slash to the basket, and even create for others at times, but doesn't command the ball and stays within her role on offense. She is also very clutch defensively. I've seen her get some Tayshaun Prince-like game saving blocks this season.

So yea, versatility, great defense, high percentage shooting, good ball IQ, hustles, stays within her role, brings extra when the teams needs it, is pretty consistent, and makes big plays defensively. What more could you ask?

Give me Andre Iguodala any day... guy is never gonna be #1 guy, so he's a second banana. Put him along a legit #1 guy like Durant and he can excel. He will rebound, he will defend, he will box out, he will make all the little plays that are important in winning games. He'll be so good that he'll be an All Star as a role player.

Just make sure he's not the #1 guy on your team.

I could RUIN YOU if I went and changed the topic title to "The Perfect NBA Role Player."

Muahahahahahaaaaa!

He's not talking about a #1 or a #2 guy, or even a #3 or #4. He's talking about the best player possible to fill that limited role that all good teams need filling. Like how a school has teachers, the headmaster, and then the janitor with the lowest role. He's talking about the best substitute teacher. The best guy that can bring whatever the team needs, whether it's starting or coming off the bench, without being a star player (especially not an all star).

Robin is a role player, just ask Batman.

Guys that are not #1 guy, meaning #2, #3, #4 guys and so on are Robins.

He's still a Robin though and ask Batman is "Robin is a star"... Batman will say hell no... Robin never gets his own movie, and Kobe never got his MVP during the three peat. Shaq got all 3.

Kobe was a "super" role player, but his job was to help Shaq (the #1 guy) to win a title, not the other way around... won't you agree with this statement? Like Robin's job is to help Batman in all their vigilante missions, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

When you help someone do a task, you're a helper, you're not the main #1 guy, you're a role player. You may be a superb role player, but still a role player.

Gasol and Artest are also role players to Kobe now.

When someone says 'role player' who is the first guy that comes to your head, someone that you think you would want as your 5th starter or first bench guy, just the ultimate glue guy. Who is the best 'solid' player in your opinion, if that makes sense.

I don't see a "who do you think is the best robin" in there anywhere.

People look at Scottie Pippen as a role player that helped MJ win titles. Not the main guy. Pip may be one of the best ever to play the game, but he was still a role player.

There's classification:

- Super role player > Kobe during three peat, Scottie Pippen, Manu Ginobili,

- Star role player > Robert Horry, Tayshaun Prince

- Role player > Ron Harper, Luc Longley

- Sucky role player > Danny Granger on USA Team

Kobe must be the greatest role player, or even the greatest Robin, I've ever seen in my entire 27 years of life, to average nearly 30 a night and running the offense. Who was the "Robin" or role player during the 2008 Boston run? Who was Batman? There is such thing as having two Batmans...

Just annoys the [expletive] out of me, that's all. Best defender, nearly 30 a night, facilitating the offense...and he's put in the same category as Tony Parker and Pau Gasol?

Anyway...when you think of a role player, you don't think of an all-star, or even a star player. Andre Iguodala is a star...borderline all-star. Technically, today, he's still Philly's franchise player.

Toni Kukoc was a role player. Ron Harper, later in his career. Robert Horry. Derek Fisher. Jason Terry. Basically all sixth men candidates, most fourth or fifth starters on a team (depends on the team, of course), guys that have a defined role in the offense/defense, but not expected to exceed their roles and carry the team on their backs.

Ron Harper was a better player than both Horry and Prince.

Common bro... I don't know how much clearer that can be.

I don't think the term 'role-player' should be used to describe side-kicks. To me, except for strong exceptions (Celtics with Fantastic Four, Lakers with their Malone-Payton-Kobe-Shaq), there are 2-3 main players in every team and everyone else can be called a role player.

Yes, Kobe was a superstar/ gold role player... the guy who, once you take the main #1 guy out, can immediately take the #1 guy. If you had taken MJ out, Pip could average 20 ppg but he couldn't lead his team to any success in playoffs... and carry the team the way MJ did. I extend the classification:

There's classification:

- Superstar/ gold role player > Kobe Bryant

- Super role player > Scottie Pippen, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Rip, Chauncey (to Melo).

- Star role player > Robert Horry, Tayshaun Prince

- Common role player > Ron Harper, Luc Longley,

- Towel-waving role player > Danny Granger on USA Team, Brian Scalabrine

And Ron Harper during the Bulls title run was no better than Tay or Robert Horry. He played above average defense, but no suffocating D like Tay, he could knock down shots but nowhere near clutch as Horry.
