Welfare ftw

I know its the UK but seriously?

Most families who are due to lose their child benefit are worrying about how they'll make ends meet without it.

But for Kelly Marshall, who has five children by four different fathers, the handout has never been about paying for nappies, food and other everyday expenses.

She saved her benefit money to help pay for breast enhancement.

And as many parents envisage tightening their belts after the Tories announced plans to cut the benefit for higher-rate taxpayers, she plans to save more of hers for liposuction and a tummy tuck.

Miss Marshall, who has never worked, rakes in almost £29,000 a year from benefits - and last year spent £4,500 to go from a 34A to a 34DD.

She explained: 'I have wanted a boob job since I was a teen. But it wasn't until I had five children that I could afford it - with all the extra benefits I get. Now I hope to have liposuction, a tummy tuck and regular Botox.

'I thought having children would make my boobs bigger, but that never happened so I decided to do something about them.

'I saved money from my benefits for four months to cover half the cost and put the rest on a credit card, which I pay back with my benefits.

'I know most people will think it is wrong I am spending taxpayers' money on my looks. But I deserve it because I am a good mum. Having children has taken its toll on my body. All mums should be able to have cosmetic surgery.

'What's the point? My mum worked all her life and she paid taxes so I feel I am getting what I deserve,' she said. 'Some people might think I am a scrounger.

'But I don't think me or my children should miss out on nice things just because I have never worked.':lmao: Miss Marshall's children, aged between three and 16, don't appear to miss out.

They all have the latest computers and gadgets, and the family have been on two holidays abroad this year.

They have a PlayStation3, a Wii and an Xbox 360 and each of the children has an additional games console to themselves.

lol at this, honestly, the government should just stop giving her benefits, put her kids in a foster home or something and tell her to get a [expletive]in job. Pretty sure there are people out there that need and would use the money for something they actually need.

I'm waiting for lkr, JYD, and the other hippie liberals to come in and say that she deserves it and that it doesn't happen in the U.S. And, find someway to blame it on Bush. .

GTFO!

because one person in the UK is everyone in the US! I agree with you wholeheartedly ECN!

There's people who cheat the welfare system. It's not perfect. But it's pretty much necessary considering most that are on it are in need of it.

I do know of people who cheat the system though and don't really need it. I smh at that.

Crazy. Which ones will be like, "The welfare program should be dropped altogether, and Medicaid/Medicare as well, and everyone needs to just get a job making $30/hour and deal with life!"

My mom is one of the many who is going through a time where she desperately needs welfare. With unemployment so high right now it is absolutely necessary for millions. People will always find a way to cheat the system in any situation, so try and not let that sway your opinion on the subject.

My thoughts on welfare: Do drug testing on those who receive welfare. If you’re doing drugs then you lose out on the benefits. You can afford the drugs, then you can afford the food.

Two major issues:

1) Drug testing costs money. Testing millions of people costs a LOT of money out of the taxpayer's pocket.

2) Most addicts you're thinking of are addicted to substances that are out of your system in 2-3 days tops (Heroin, Cocaine, etc...). It'd be very, very easy to beat those tests, and essentially the government would be paying millions for something that would have a very low success rate.

My thoughts exactly, I had to get a drug test to get my job, you should get one to receive welfare!

And Nitro let them do the Hair Follicle drug test, no matter what you take it takes at least 30 days to clear from the hair Follicles

Hair folicle tests are even more expensive than the usual urine test. Once again, the price to pay for that will becoming out of YOUR pockets. It's different from getting a job because those are private companies paying for your test.

This is why in-Kind transfers would minimize this type of misuse. Sure, food stamps and other types of in-kind transfers can be resold on the black market but at the end of the transaction the recipient has no choice but to use the transfer for what it was meant to be used for. Cash transfers don't insure this and usually lead to someone cheating the system and costing us money.

Right, but I think that the drug-testing cost won't come close to the tons of undeserving people's spendings.

In fact, I don't just think that...I can say I know it for sure. My aunt was on welfare for a long time. If there was one massive bill showing how much she spent...well, that bill would indeed be massive.

I would MAYBE agree if it wasn't for the fact that it's so easy to beat the tests that the government would likely issue (no way they do blood tests, and if they don't do hair folicle tests for probation, they won't be doing it for welfare). The rate at which they would successfully identify those users would be low...a lot lower than what would justify the price of administering those tests, especially if the governments wants to adminster a test per paycheck. My mom is currently in recovery and in the process of getting back her nursing liscence, which requires monthly urine screens. She doesn't have health insurance, and the price for those screening is insanely expensive (upwards of $60). If you are testing all people on welfare, and maybe only 20-30% are actual users, then you are also spending an insanely amount of money on getting clean people tested who will never show up positive. And of those 20-30% that are users, I'd be willing to bet onlyabout 5% actually end up failing the tests.

You also have to remember the repercussions of cutting off the thousands of drug-users who do need that money for shelter/food. Not everyone can just move into a family member or friend's place. A lot of those people would be homeless, and that creates a whole other mess of problems (especially if they are drug users, who will turn to crime to get their fix). The more logical solution would be to cut their welfare checks down, but I think just ditching the drug test idea would make a lot more sense.

I also laugh at the fact that a lot of people ACTUALLY believe that people that receive welfare are living well..and that those that cheat the system are driving around in brand new cars, and buying new video games every other week. It's simply not true. Those that cheat the system that don't need it are certainly living fine (obviously, which is why they are cheating the system) but those who do need it, even with welfare, are not living an average American. lifestyle.

That's just completely and utterly false. If you give people money, they will spend it on luxury items and stuff that they want. Obama has really gotten in your head. Stop trying to defend these low-life scum-bags that abuse the system. And, I'm only talking about the ones that abuse it, which is a very high percentage.

No, THAT'S completely and utterly false. The average welfare check is about $600 per month, and you cannot qualify if you make around $700 per month. Keep in mind, they adjust the amount you receive based on if you have a job, and the welfare check eventually stops coming. Now, let's say you are making around $1200 per month between a job and welfare...that averages out to about $15,000 income for an entire year. If you know anything about finances, you'd know that is WAYYYYY below the point where you can afford "luxory" items. It barely, barely can afford you a decent apartment (which in northern NJ is about a grand per month), let alone the other stack of bills you have to pay for (such as cell phone bills, car bills, insurance, etc...).

Please think before you speak, have actual knowledge about the subject, meet some people on welfare, and don't play off a stupid, unfounded stereotype that is blown out of proportion because of a few [expletive] people.

It's not a high percentage, and these people that are cheating the system for the most part ARE NOT living a life of luxury items and stuff they want.
