Dash
Take a look at the starting point guards for the past 20 NBA championships. 2009-2010: Derek Fisher2008: Rajon Rondo2007: Tony Parker2006: Jason Williams2005: Tony Parker2004: Chauncey Billups2003: Tony Parker2000-2002: Derek Fisher1999: Avery Johnson1996-1998: Ron Harper1994-1995: Kenny Smith1993: BJ Armstrong1991-1992: John Paxson The last time the starting point guard for a championship team averaged 8 assists per game or more (Avery Johnson was close with 7.4) was in 1990 when Isiah Thomas averaged a triple double. However, Isiah was most notably known for his scoring and penetrating ability, so you can hardly call him a pure point. Thoughts? Owner Real Deal Posted October 10, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted October 10, 2010 I think it tells more about how unselfish teams, as a whole, are more important than a pure point running the show. How overrated were Steve Nash and Jason Kidd throughout their careers?
Check my Stats
What exactly a 'pure point' is by your definition (you need 8+ apg?), and how people rate them to begin with. I don't think you can understate the importance of having a point that can competently handle the ball and play defense, but when you have a player like Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Duncan, you obviously don't necessarily need a ball dominant point. Newman
I can only think of 2 pure point guards at the moment: Andre Miller and Jason Kidd. I don't think they are overrated.
