If they were 1-4 or the Cardinals were 2-3 then I would feel alright about their chances, but I'm really not sure at this point. Their remaining schedule SHOULD be easy, but they've already lost to the Seahawks and Chiefs(who weren't supposed to be good).

They found a way to blow it against the Saints, Falcons, and Eagles.

If the offense opens it up like they did towards the end of the Saints and Philadelphia game, they should be able to win the division, but their coaching staff seems to think they are a running team when in reality they are more suited as a passing team or a more balanced team.

I'd say the order of likeliness to win the division is:

Cardinals- Have a three game lead

49er's- I still think they are too talented to not make a strong push for the division

Seahawks- Could flip with the Rams

Rams- Could flip with the Seahawks

Also, the Cardinals have Max Hall starting at QB and he did [expletive] last game, but the Saints killed themselves. I'm banking on him sucking.

And, most importantly, the 49er's NEEEEEEDDDD to win BOTH games against the Cardinals or they are done.

Alex Smith remains 49ers starter

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Alex Smith has already watched offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye get fired after San Francisco's awful start. So it's no surprise Smith still wasn't sure where he stood in Mike Singletary's eyes when arriving at 49ers headquarters Monday.

The quarterback is keeping his starting job for at least another week.

Singletary said he plans to evaluate Smith's status on a week-to-week basis from now on considering the team's 0-5 start and inconsistent offense. The coach contemplated a switch early in the fourth quarter of Sunday night's 27-24 loss to the Eagles, but Smith talked him out of it after backup David Carr had already taken a few steps onto the field.

"When I look at Alex, I'm convinced that there's something there that I feel that he can be a good quarterback," Singletary said Monday. "But it's up to him. You're always a work in progress, but at some point in time you have to grab hold of it and really come to that point to where you know, and everybody else around you, that this guy has arrived. ... I do believe that Alex Smith has all of the tools, all of the things that he needs to be that guy. I just need to see all of it."

I really like the niners and would like to see them reach the playoffs but it would be a long shot with them already being 0-5. Luckly for the niners the rest of their schedule doesn't seem to tough with the exception of Green Bay and San Diego. But just because the rest of the schedule looks pretty easy doesn't mean the niners need to take any team easily, they need to win every game against teams they are better than starting next week with Oakland.

No - Too deep of a hole.

Carr - Honestly can't be worse than Smith. Looked good in spot play the past few years.

Yes - He's simply not a good coach.

Crabtree - Stretching the field with Crabs will open the intermediate for Vernon and the running for Gore.

The Niners won't make the playoffs. Their upcoming schedule isn't too bad, but with the start they've had I see them finishing 6-10 or 7-9 at best.

vs. Oakland-L

@ Carolina-W

vs. Denver-L

BYE

vs. St. Louis-W

vs. Tampa Bay-L

@ Arizona-W

@ Green Bay-L

vs. Seattle-W

@ San Diego-L

@ St. Louis-W

vs. Arizona-W

David Carr is just as good if not better than Alex Smith, I wouldn't be surprised him to see him get pt either half way through the Oakland game or start the Panther game.

Mike Singletery should get fired no doubt in my mind, he's a hell of a motivator but not a good coach.

Frank Gore is easily the most important player to the teams success. The Niners have failed to open up lanes for him all season long.

I doubt it. This team is too unlucky and Alex Smith isn't a big enough of a leader to get them on a streak.

They can do it because the division is so bad, but I really believe Arizona still has it in them to be a good team.

Arizona is a great home team, and that win against New Orleans was huge.

The Arizona vs. 49ers games will be the telling sign for me.
