deestillballin
Making English the official language of Oklahoma brought heated debate over the legislative session. Now, you'll decide on it. It's one of 11 questions on the November ballot. When you get a driver's license manual or fill out an application for college, there are two options: English or Spanish. One lawmaker wants to put a stop to it and make government services operate using English only. Full Story What do you think of it?
GamerGuy
If you're an immigrant and you come to be a permanent resident here, you should make an effort to learn the national language. Seems like a fair law to me.

Owner Real Deal Posted October 12, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted October 12, 2010 Good for Oklahoma. It should be English. Three years ago, when I got my job with an oil refinery, I had to sit through a two-hour long test. I was one of the last people to grab a seat, and I got one right next to a translator and the illegal trying to get a job. He was illegal because he didn't understand, through speech or reading, a single word of English. The translator read every single question to him in Spanish, and he answered it. All in my ear, the entire two hours. Ironically, it was another who caused a reactor to blow up a few weeks ago because he didn't understand specific directions. If you know anything about oil refineries, you know they are the most dangerous places in the world. Had that reactor blew up near one of the many oil tanks, the entire refinery would've blew, and it takes our entire town with it, plus 10-15 miles in all directions outside of city limits (everything within 10 miles of the refinery literally melts, damage outside of that caused by the explosion). From just that one reactor blowing in the ammonia plant, it caused a boom that rattled windows 10 miles away...had people running out of the school across the street from me, looking east and praying it wasn't the Coop (that's what the refinery is called). Come to the US, learn English. Have your papers. Get a driver's license and a social security number. The people born in this country have to. It's bad enough that big-name factories and companies are hiring illegals to work for minimum wage (and sometimes less) just because they are twice as cheap, and they do it because they split rent and utilities with five others in the same house. Pretty ridiculous.
deestillballin
It was some things I had to read about. Some people may see it as racist, which I can see their point to a extent, but I don't think I should have to press 1 for English, I know if i go to Mexico im not going to hear press 4 for English. If it all makes sense, I see were some may be against it, but I am all for it.

GamerGuy
except there is no official language in the USI didn't say it was the official language. It is the national language, as in, the most widely spoken language in our country.

EastCoastNiner
except there is no official language in the US Too bad it is for over half of the states in our country. If you're in the U.S., you better speak English. When U.S. citizens go to Mexico, they don't give a [expletive] about us.

Flash
Outstanding law that should be used in all 50 states. Its simple, come here legally, go through the process like the ancestors of everyone who lives here did and get your papers, learn the language that 99.9% of the people in this country speak and we'd be more than happy to have you. Flash
what are you going to do about it? [expletive] and whine on the internet like you always do? ECN is 100% correct. My grandparents immigrated from Cuba, got their papers and became citizens and learned the language enough to where they're fluent in both English and Spanish. He's right about Mexico too. If you go there and don't know Spanish, you're at a severe disadvantage. there is nothing in federal law dictating that English is the official language of this country. Because in our country we have such a thing as states rights. The federal government has nothing to do with this. Lkr
Because in our country we have such a thing as states rights. The federal government has nothing to do with this. You live in a state with official english. does it make any difference? no. this law won't matter, it won't change anything. the only way anything ever matters is if it because federal law. Yeah, well, the process before was a lot simpler than it is now. Many just came here on boats and settled on the land or went out west, many passed through Ellis Island, etc. Now it can take years to get residency here, and it took my parents 20 years to get a green card. I do agree that people should try to come here legally, but I definitely understand the situation for those that don't want to go through that process. Not trying to say what they are doing is good, but I can understand why. It's ridiculous to even compare immigration in America's early history to now. They did it the right way. No, for those that didn't. We need to deport their asses back to wherever they came from. It's not fair to those that have to wait that go through the LEGAL process. SRV
They should do that in Miami. If you are a tourist here, you are screwed, no matter what restaurant you go to, they all assume you speak spanish (Unless its Miami Beach). I am cuban, but my spanish is horrible, my entire family speaks english though, and they understand it. I got pissed when I went to Burger King and the lady had no idea what I was saying. I have even had to translate for some poor dude when he picked up his food at a place called Sergio's...poor dude had no idea what he walked into lol.
