Vincent Jackson to report to Chargers

The Chargers knew it was a possibility all along, because they believed Vincent Jackson would remain under their control if he did not get an accrued season in 2010.

But Vincent Jackson and, in particular, his agents said there was no chance Jackson would report to the Chargers in 2010 to play for their one-year tender.

It appears increasingly likely, however, Jackson will do just that.

An ESPN report on Wednesday night says the league's remaining two holdouts plan to report to their respective teams in time to get an accrued season and ensure their unrestricted free agency after this year.

While Jackson's agents said emphatically last month that the receiver would not play for the Chargers in 2010 unless the team upped its offer, ESPN reports that Jackson and New England guard Logan Mankins have gotten advice from the NFL Players Association that they should report.

According to several sources this summer, the union had previously told the agents for the players sitting out that they would be unrestricted after this season even if they sat out the entire 2010 season.

Jackson must report by Oct. 30, the day before the Chargers' eighth game. He has to be on the roster for six games in order get an accrued season, and because he is on the Roster Exempt List, he must sit out three games after reporting and signing.

Mankins was not placed on the Roster Exempt List by the Patriots and has until Nov. 16 to report.

The Chargers could trade Jackson by Tuesday, but it will take a second- and third-round draft pick if an NFC team wants him and first- and second-round picks if an AFC team wants him.

The St. Louis Rams, in desperate need of receivers, reportedly declined interest this week due to Jackson's high salary demands.

Long story short, he needs to report by October 30th and be on the roster for 6 games in order to gain a service year so he can earn unrestricted FA.

Look's like it's going to be a bitter end to this relationship.

AJ Smith is a poor, poor negotiator, and he really demands too much in trades (a second and third for a guy who wasn't great last year despite having a top 5 quarterback, really?).

Vincent Jackson was outstanding last year lol.. great quarterback or not. His play on the field justified his 9 ranking in receiving. He has a huge frame, knows how to locate the ball and to use that frame to make a play on smaller cornerbacks. Vincent Jackson did as much to the Chargers as the Chargers did to him.

I was basing it only on stats, seeing as how I only saw a handful of Chargers games (and he performed poorly in the majority of those), and I'd expect better stats from Phillip Rivers' top receiver. But maybe his impact was great; I wouldn't know since, as I said, I only saw a couple of games.
