Defenseless Player Penalty

Do you like the rule? I kinda agree with the overall idea of it, but is it really needed? During the Philly-ATL game, Desean Jackson caught the ball, turned around, and got leveled by Dunta Robinson.

Desean had full possession of the ball, Robinson made a play on him, and was a shoulder to shoulder hit. Yeah it was a nasty hit, but that's football, right? I think this rule should only apply to plays where the ball is over thrown, uncatchable, or dropped. Like Ray Lewis said, "it's a man's game."

You make the call...

A lot of helmet to helmet hits are just uncalled for. What is the point? It negatively effects both players's lives and well being when you could easily not hit the head. Football is football regardless of the type of hit, just tackle lower.

lmao at him having possession and not being defenseless btw. he barely had the ball in his hands and was turning his head when THWOMP he's down

...but the point is he did have the ball in his hands, and as soon as a receiver is in contact with the ball, a defender is allowed to hit him.

He was still defenseless. you can wrap him up around the waist or even hit him in the waist. no reason to aim for the head, especially when you lead with your own head.

Yeah I understand that he could have hit him without completely leveling Desean, but it's in the heat of the moment, sometimes you just can't control your actions.

And while it looked like he was leading with his helmet, he did in fact hit him with his shoulder.

So how was he defenseless? That's what I'm wondering. he caught the ball, the ball was in play, and was eligible to get tackled.

DeSean Jackson has "severe concussion"

Last year, a concussion caused Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson to miss one game. This year, a concussion could put him out even longer.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Jackson suffered a "severe concussion" after being his hard by Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson on Sunday. Glazer also reports that Jackson has suffered memory loss.

His status moving forward isn't known. He won't be able to play until he's cleared by a team doctor and an independent neurological consultant.

If he was wrapped up he would have caught the ball...the point of defense is to make sure he does catch the ball. It was a fair play. The ball hit him, the defense has the right to hit him. That's football.

you don't need to lead like that. you can use your hands, or even lead towards the ball and not his head. sorry, but it is just stupid to have all of these concussions.

He led with his shoulder. How the hell do you lead with your hands, wtf?

I agree about the fact that the hit should have been lower but that is difficult to decipher when you are going that fast.

I never said lead with your hands. you can knock the ball out of his hands, because he was bobbling to catch it in the first place. hitting him anywhere would have caused an incompletion in that case

What play are you watching!? Jackson is not bobbling the ball at all.

Rodney Harrison brought up a good point. Players who make milliions don't care about fines, all they are trying to do it get on the highlight real and make a name for themself. The best way to stop something like this from happening is to suspend guys, that way they not only lose a paycheck for one game but they also let their teammates down.

Did Rodney Harrison of all people just call for guys to be suspended for a hard hit or dirty play?
