I heard yesterday that Russell Martin had signed with the Yankees, no credible source, turned out to be fake. Heard it again just now, no credible source... to be seen.

I've heard as much as that they are taking an aggressive approach with him. Not sure how much I like the idea. We don't have to find a way to spend for this to be a successful offseason. I have been saying again and again that Cervy deserves another chance.

I am going to refrain from commenting on the Lee speculation for now. Trying not to get my hopes up, and failing miserably.

But yes, Fish is right. The Phillies have a strict policy against long term deals with pitchers.

Cervelli honestly deserves nothing. He deserves a one year, show me contract with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

Martin, if healthy, is at worst a solid defensive catcher. At best he contributes at the plate as well. Either of those options would be a huge upgrade over Cervelli.

Very highly unlikely...but who knows if Lee wants back in Philly and the money is right, anything is possible..

I think if he wanted the money and nothing else, he'd have signed with the Yankees a week ago. That is what has my hopes up.

IDK, the Rangers offer isn't far off and they have the whole "we're tools and have no state tax" thing shaving off some millions.

He can make up for state income tax in endorsments...

His ugly extended slump seemed to start around the same time that he was started more frequently. He's only 24, I say it's worth another shot. You could argue that he even had a better season offensively than Martin.

In terms of being a backup catcher, having Cervelli is not such a bad thing, defensively speaking. If we get Martin on a smart, one-year deal, I suppose it's a good idea. But I don't think it's worth trying to outbid Boston for him.

You could argue that, but Martin's played the past two seasons on a bum hip that was just operated on this offseason, while Cervelli was healthy as a horse. Cisco provided absolutely nothing at the plate or behind the dish, he was literally worthless this season.

If he's a AAA guy brought up for emergencies, I'm down. Anything else and I'm tremendously dissatisfied.

JMO.

True but your not going to leave 7 years 175 mil on the table to sign a 4 year 80 mil deal, idc who you are, that just silly

I wanted Lee to stay in Texas. I don't understand why you would want to go back to the team that dumped you for Roy.

Because he loved it here and realized that last year, it was a business decision. The Phillies realized that Roy Halladay wanted to sign an extension here, and Cliff Lee wanted to test free agency. They had no idea at the time that he'd leave $50 million on the table to extend here.

But it all works out in the end! I just wish we could have gotten more from Seattle last year...
