Raptors Staff Unhappy With Weems' Chucking

Recommended Posts

Not the exact words, but it is basically the jist of what this is about.

But injury or not, there’s a simple reason why Weems’ role as an occasional backup hasn’t expanded this year — at least, there is in the mind of Jay Triano, the Raptors coach. A season ago, Triano said, Weems found a crucial niche because of his explosive energy and defensive prowess. This season, Triano said, Weems has more than occasionally forgotten the reason for that success. In lieu, he’s been shooting the ball more than anyone on the coaching staff appreciates.

“Sometimes (Weems) gets confused with trying to score as many points as he can,” Triano said. “Last year it was interesting. Things weren’t expected (from Weems). So anything he did was a bonus. This year . . . expectations were a little higher for us, and a little bit higher for him, probably.”

That Weems, the 24-year-old from West Memphis, would crave offensive numbers isn’t at all shocking. “It’s not uncommon for a lot of people (in the NBA),” said Triano.

The Raptors have a five-man rotation at the wing position; in Weems’ absence on Saturday night, the guy who was considered the fifth of those five players, Julian Wright, hit plenty of coach-pleasing notes in his 17 minutes of court time. Wright shot more frequently from the free-throw line (eight attempts) than he did from the field (six attempts), and he made a team-high three steals. Weems, in the previous five games combined, managed just 15 free-throw attempts (against 44 field-goal tries) and four steals.

Weems to Triano:

"What the [expletive] you gonna do, coach?"
