Nominees: Snubs and Surprises

 

 

SURPRISE: Halle Berry, "Frankie & Alice"

(Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama)

 

When critics screened the film a few months ago, Halle was knocked for delivering a ridiculously melodramatic performance. We saw it a few weeks ago ... and we couldn't agree more. Long story short, we're surprised to see her in the mix, and we're even more surprised to see Sally Hawkins ("Made in Dagenham"), Gwyneth Paltrow ("Country Strong"), and Naomi Watts ("Fair Game") sitting on the sidelines.

 

SURPRISE: Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, "The Tourist"

(Best Performance by an Actress/Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy)

 

Surprised to see them nominated because critics felt they lacked chemistry? Yes. Surprised to see them nominated because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is desperate to have Angie and Johnny attend the ceremony (and hopefully increase TV ratings)? No.

SNUB: Ben Affleck, "The Town"

(Best Director - Motion Picture)

 

Love him or hate him, you have to give another former Oscar winner, Ben Affleck (who dated Gwyneth Paltrow on-and-off between 1997 and 2000), props for directing one of the year's best films. The bank robbery scene alone is worthy of at least 2 Globes! And, dare we say it ... his acting wasn't half bad either.

 

SURPRISE: "Burlesque"

(Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy)

 

Apparently the Hollywood Foreign Press Association couldn't just nominate 5 deserving comedies. They had to make sure a musical was in the mix. With "Burlesque" snagging a coveted spot, funnier films like "Please Give" and "I Love You Phillip Morris" got snubbed.

 

SNUB: Jeff Bridges, "True Grit"

(Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama)

 

With Franco, Firth, and Eisenberg all locks, there were two spots left for the taking. Jeff won last year for "Crazy Heart" -- and was almost guaranteed to grab one of 'em -- but the HFPA opted for Ryan Gosling and Mark Wahlberg, whose "Fighter" nabbed a ton of noms, including one for Best Picture - Drama.

 

SURPRISE: Mila Kunis, "Black Swan"

(Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture)

 

A total surprise ... and a total treat. We thought Barbara Hershey -- who plays Natalie Portman's crazed mom in "Black Swan" -- was going to be nominated, not Mila, who truly impressed as rival dancer Lily.

 

SURPRISE: Leonardo DiCaprio, "Inception"

(Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama)

 

We predicted Jeff Bridges and Leo DiCaprio would get the final two spots in the Best Actor in a Drama race, but Marky Mark and Ryan Gosling swooped in and snatched them. Jeff's exclusion was more of a snub, whereas Leo's was more of a surprise.

 

SURPRISE: Emma Stone, "Easy A"

(Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy)

 

Wow. This was a complete shocker. "Easy A" was cute, and Emma Stone is even cuter, but did she really deserve a nom, especially when Catherine Keener ("Please Give") and Reese Witherspoon ("How Do You Know") are nowhere to be found?

 

SURPRISE: Michael Douglas, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"

(Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture)

 

Michael deserved the Golden Globe he won for his performance as Gordon Gekko in 1987's "Wall Street," but a nomination for reprising the role in the panned sequel? Not so much.

SNUB: Reese Witherspoon, "How Do You Know"

(Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy)

 

With an A-list cast and James L. Brooks at the helm, we expected "How Do You Know" to play a major factor at the Globes. Surprisingly, it was shut out, along with former Globe winner Reese, who is great in the film.

SNUB: "Shrek Forever After"

(Best Animated Feature Film)

 

This is probably more of a surprise and less of a snub. The Best Animated Feature Film category features a ton of worthy contenders, including "Toy Story 3" and "How to Train Your Dragon." With only 5 spots available, something had to miss the cut, and it happened to be this sequel, which was -- by far -- the least liked of the franchise

 

SNUB: Danny Boyle, "127 Hours"

(Best Director - Motion Picture)

 

Mr. Boyle won a Globe a few years ago for directing "Slumdog Millionaire," and he was more than deserving of at least a nom for his work on the exhilarating -- albeit difficult to watch -- "127 Hours." Aronofsky ("Black Swan"), Fincher ("The Social Network"), Hooper ("The King's Speech"), and Nolan ("Inception") were locks, but "The Fighter's" David O. Russell prevented Danny from snagging the final spot.

 

SNUB: "Friday Night Lights"

(Best Television Series - Drama)

 

The actual nominees are all great. We love "Boardwalk Empire," "Dexter," "The Good Wife," "Mad Men," and "The Walking Dead," but if the Best TV Series - Comedy category can have 6 nominees, why can't Drama, and why can't the painfully underrated "FNL" be that sixth entrant?

 

SNUB: "The Office"

(Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy)

 

Perhaps it's just us, but we kinda think this season of "The Office" has been its best yet. Hilarious week-in and week-out, unlike "30 Rock," which lost its charm years ago.

Agreed with most of the list, very disappointed to not see Danny Boyle and Ben Affleck get nominated for best director, The Town and 127 Hours were two of the best films this year IMO. I hate Affleck as an actor but as a director he is a straight up beast so far.

 

Biggest surprise for me easily was seeing Emma Stone and Michael Douglas get nominations. Emma is a talent on the rise huge nomination for her, and Michael reprising his role as Gekko was nice but the first Wall Street in 87 was a much better movie and performance.

 

I haven't seen The Fighter yet with Whalberg but it sure did grab a lot of nominations, cant judge that one until I see it, it does look great.

 

Love the award season coming up my favorite time of the year, and overall a solid year for movies in Hollywood.

I started watching Friday Night Lights last month and I've already gone through all the current seasons that have been released and I'm also surprised if isn't up against the likes of Dexter, The Good Wife, Boardwalk etc.

Tonight's the night on NBC. Ricky Gervais is hosting, been a pretty good year at the movies.

 

I am glad they are giving Comedy some love but man this list is by far the weakest of them all.

 

Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy

 

Johnny Depp, "Alice in Wonderland"

Johnny Depp, "The Tourist"

Paul Giamatti, "Barney's Version"

Jake Gyllenhaal, "Love and Other Drugs"

Kevin Spacey, "Casino Jack"

 

None of those movies will even get an Oscar nod, and those two Depp movies were absolutely bashed by critics, I personally hated both. The box office numbers don't show it but most critics said those were two of the worse films Depp has done in his career.

 

I would like to see Spacey win that award, but who knows it's not the strongest bunch. The rest of the categories are pretty competitive.
