Nitro
North America will be treated to a total lunar eclipse early Tuesday morning. What makes this eclipse rare is that it coincides with the winter solstice, a feat that has not occurred in over 350 years. Tuesday's eclipse will begin at 1:33 a.m. EST and will continue through 5:01 a.m. Totality, the time when Earth's shadow completely covers the moon, will start at 2:41 a.m. and lasts 72 minutes. Roughly 3:15 a.m. will prove to be the best time to view the eclipse. NASA reports the eclipse will then be at its peak and the moon will display the most brilliant shade of coppery red. LINK I'm very excited to get a chance to see it tonight. FYI, the moon will look like this at around 3:15am EST: http://www.eclipsetours.com/darkertle.jpg

Sun Tzu
^ It sucks that Australians or anyone outside of North America won't be able to see it though.

Smitty
This is the last lunar eclipse considering the Earth ends in 2012. lol, people still believe that even though it's been debunked multiple times.
YugoRocketsFan
Few alive today are likely to see a recurrence. The next time both winter solstice and total lunar eclipse are to occur on the same calendar day will again be on Dec. 21. But the year will be 2094, Chester said. bloo
It's the last TOTAL lunar eclipse before 2012. There's a full lunar eclipse in 2011.
Nitro
There's a full lunar eclipse in 2011. My bad, you're right, although it won't be visible from North America. After next year's total eclipse, there won't be another until 2014.
