*Swish*
Blake Griffin makes the top 10 way more interesting. He's a beast and is a high flying dunker. Got to love this player. These double doubles are impressing. Not only it's a huge streak but it's also not 10 points and 10 rebounds. It's more like 20 points and 20 rebounds. Sħãlïq™
Check this out: Blake’s Big Place in History Blake Griffin isn’t just a shoo-in for Rookie of the Year, he’s established himself statistically as one of the most dominant rookies of the last quarter century. That list includes Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, LeBron James and David Robinson. Blake’s latest exploits happened earlier this week when he went off on Indiana for a career-high 47 points (his second 40-point effort) and 14 rebounds. Griffin joined some elite company in Michael Jordan and Rick Barry as the only players 21 or under to go for at least 47 and 14. The red-headed Clipper also is only the second rook of the last 25 years to record at least 45 and 10 — Shaq being the other. So where does Blake rank among the best rookies of the last 25 years? Some have suggested he’s the best first-year big man since Shaq. Duncan might have something to say about that. Elias Sports Bureau was kind enough to research the rookies to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds since 1985 and how much their teams improved in the win column: Season Player Points Rebounds Record Previous season (+ wins) 1999-00 Elton Brand (Bulls) 20.1 10.0 17-65 13-37 +4 1997-98 Tim Duncan (Spurs) 21.1 11.9 56-26 20-62 +36 1992-93 Alonzo Mourning (Hornets) 21.0 10.3 44-38 31-51 +13 1992-93 Shaquille O’Neal (Magic) 23.4 13.9 41-41 21-61 +20 1989-90 David Robinson (Spurs) 24.3 12.0 56-26 21-61 +35 Griffin is averaging 22.5 points and 12.8 rebounds going into tonight’s visit from Minnesota. His Clippers are on a 30-win pace, but they’re 14-12 since a horrendous 1-13 start . If they can keep up that pace from now to the end of the season, Los Angeles’ other team would finish 38-44. Probably not playoff worthy, but a solid nine-game improvement over last year’s 29-53. http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2011/01/19/blakes-rank-among-rook-big-men/?ls=iref:nbahpt1
Owner Real Deal Posted January 19, 2011 Author Owner Report Share Posted January 19, 2011 Duncan was a very good rookie, but the extra wins gained by drafting him is all due to the fact that the Spurs (and, mainly, David Robinson) tanked to get that #1 pick. GamerGuy
The streak ends. But he's more concerned about wins than his own stats. Beast.
ChosenOne
Damn it! I was really rooting for him to continue and break that record. We at least he holds the record for rookies.
Nitro
...in other news, Kevin Love kept his double-double streak alive, stretching it to I believe 29 games.
Dr. Feelgood
Yeah I was gonna say, Kevin Love wins the consecutive double doubles battle with Griffin...even though they lost the game.
Sħãlïq™
Sick Stat: Griffin is averaging 23 points, 12.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in his debut season with the Clippers. Only two players in league history have averaged those numbers for an entire rookie season: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1969-70) and Elgin Baylor (1958-59). Only six rookies, furthermore, have averaged 20, 10 and 3 ... with all but Sidney Wicks in the Basketball Hall of Fame and Griffin on course to be the first since Larry Bird. 20 PPG, 10 RPG, 3 APG: Rookie Season, NBA HistorySeason Player Team PPG RPG APG1979-80 Larry Bird Boston 21.3 10.4 4.51971-72 Sidney Wicks Portland 24.5 11.5 4.31969-70 K. They are: Tim Duncan (1998), Dikembe Mutombo (1992), David Robinson (1990), Patrick Ewing (1986), Hakeem Olajuwon (1985), Ralph Sampson (1984), Kelly Tripucka (1982) and Buck Williams (1982). • For comparison's sake, only five rookies have started the All-Star Game in the last 30 years: Ming (2003), Grant Hill (1995), Shaquille O'Neal (1993), Michael Jordan (1985) and Isiah Thomas (1982). • The last player before Griffin to have two 40-point games in his rookie season was Allen Iverson in 1996-97. • Griffin's 14.2 points per game in the paint rank second in the league behind only Dwight Howard. • Griffin is also third in second-chance points at 5.0 per game (behind only Zach Randolph and Kevin Love) and second in doubles with 40 behind Love's 43. • Griffin's 110 dunks rank second this season to Howard's total of 118 entering Orlando's home date Thursday with Miami. • Griffin has drawn 373 fouls on the opposition (behind only Howard) and has four games with at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists (which only trails LeBron James' five such games). • In the last 20 years, Duncan (1997-98), O'Neal (1992-93) and Alonzo Mourning (1992-93) are the only rookies besides Griffin to rank in the NBA's top 15 in points per game and rebounds per game.http://espn.go.com/nba/dailydime/_/page/dime-110204-06/suns-set-keeping-nash
