UPDATE: "I don't see it happening right now"

Recommended Posts

It's 90 to 95 per cent done, a source tells Fred Kerber. So optimistic are the Nets, he writes, that the team has a schedule that it hopes will put Carmelo Anthony in a Nets uniform vs. the Pistons next Friday.

"The deal could be agreed to principle before Tuesday, then finalized later next week. If completed, Anthony is expected to meet with Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov on Tuesday or Wednesday," he writes. "One person directly involved in the trade scenario suggested that if all goes as planned and the deal is finalized, Anthony could play his first game for the Nets next Friday against the Pistons."

I bet the percentage of him being right is more like 3-5 per cent.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Carmelo Anthony jerseys are on sale for half-price in Denver with national media outlets suggesting a deal is close to being done — and sources maintain here that a trade between the Nets, Nuggets and Pistons could happen this week.

But coach Avery Johnson splashed a little cold water on the torrid of rumors when he said the Nets team at practice on Sunday will be the one competing Wednesday and Friday in Newark.

Johnson described the entire situation as laughable, “We deal with this kind of stuff every day ... The team that you see right now, you’ll see this team in uniform Wednesday. You see this team (pointing at players), you’ll see them Wednesday night. ... You’ll see the same team Friday night.”

Nets principal owner Mikhail Prokhorov already was flying in from Moscow this week for “Russian Culture Night” at Prudential Center. He likely will get an audience with Carmelo Anthony for a “Sell a Superstar on the Nets Future” presentation.

According to a published report, the Nuggets gave the Nets permission to speak to Anthony, a clear indication the much-reported three-team trade with Detroit could be nearing an end.

Last week, sources said the deal, that could include 14-to-16 players, could be completed this week. But the biggest factor remains whether Anthony will sign a three-year, $65 million extension. The Nets won’t do the deal without a commitment from Anthony.

All along, the Nets have been confident the All-Star small forward would, but have not been given any assurances, which is why a meeting may be necessary.
