"There's no question, it's personal. It's about him against myself. That's what it's going to come down to."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- It's personal -- again. This time, Rex Ryan is out for Bill Belichick.

Calling out one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, the New York Jets' coach delivered an unsolicited rant Monday, admitting he was outcoached by Belichick in last month's blowout and vowing to flip the script in Sunday's AFC divisional playoff game against the New England Patriots.

"This is about Bill Belichick versus Rex Ryan," Ryan said, addressing the upcoming showdown in Foxborough for the first time. "There's no question, it's personal. It's about him against myself. That's what it's going to come down to."

In terms of football duels, this was the verbal equivalent of a white glove across the face.

Ryan said both teams are even from the standpoint of talent and assistant coaches, and that the rubber game will be decided by his ability to match wits with Belichick. In their last meeting, Dec. 6 in Foxborough, the Jets were humiliated on Monday Night Football 45-3.

"I was outcoached in that game," said Ryan, who also used the "it's personal" line last week in preparation for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. "I said it then, I'm saying it now. Belichick, I recognize the fact this is a Hall of Fame coach. He'll go down in history as maybe the greatest football coach in the history of this game, or going to be close to it.

"He was at that level that week and I was not. For whatever reason, I never had my team prepared the way it should've been prepared. That falls right down on me."

Belichick, in a conference call about two hours after Ryan made his comment, took a lighthearted approach.

"I might have a little quickness on him, he's probably got a little more strength and power on me," Belichick said. "I don't think you'll see either of us out there making any blocks, or tackles, or runs, throws or catches. At least you won't see me doing that. It's probably a good thing for our team."

This guy is really annoying.

There's a difference between being confident, and a douche bag.

Don't take him seriously. He is trying to take the pressure off of his team. You know by saying the game comes down to him and Bill that it is obviously not serious. Belichick knew it was a joke, and made a joke back. He's not being confident either, he is just having fun with the media.

Maybe, but Ryan seems serious about it. I think it's just to annoy the opposing team.

He's so right. When the Jets walk in to kick the hell out of the Pats (ha), I'm going to be putting ALL of my attention on the sidelines.

Someone should tell Rex that he's not even on the same planet as Belichick, so it only makes sense that he would have to talk this loud to get his opinion heard.

Pats should run the score up, if they end up blowing them out.

I remember him spewing a bunch of crap back in December too and then the Jets lost 45-3 to the Pats.

he also said things about the Colts game and ended up winning. talking crap really hasn't made a difference for him. some players benefit from a silly coach, others don't. Tony Dungy was never over the top, and it worked for him. Ditka, Buddy Ryan, Herm Edwards, etc had a wild personality and it worked for them.

Ditka, Ryan and Edwards all have what...one conference championship game appearance among them? I'm assuming Ditka won the SB that same season, but still...and if I recall correctly, when they were talking Herm Edwards on ESPN a while back, they showed that he had a losing record, both in the playoffs and in the regular season. Buddy Ryan didn't have a single winning season with the Cardinals, and had just three in his career, all with the Eagles. No playoff wins.

It's safe to say that Dungy had a more successful career than all three of them, combined. I'm not really sure if they were good examples...nothing really worked for Ryan or Herm.

Pretty sure Buddy Ryan was a defensive coordinator for the Bears teams in the 80's....not positive on that.

And Herm Edwards isn't that good of a coach. I like him but if anyone's trying to act like he's a great football coach they're quite mistaken.

Cromartie and the rest of the Jets should just shut the [expletive] up.

You know the Pats are really gonna throttle the Jets this weekend. They're not playing into the media game, saving it all for the field.

I'l probably going to this game, so I hope the Patriots dominate them!

The tickets are probably outrageously expensive. I guess for a rich Republican such as yourself it's not an issue. ;)

Just kidding, it'd be a sick game to go to for sure.

My dad and uncle have had four season tickets for over 25+ years, so I go a few times each season. If they win this week, I will be going next week as well. I just hope the Patriots dominate the Jets.
