My guess at the Opening Day 25 man roster, as of today...

Rotation:

1. Roy Halladay

2. Cliff Lee

3. Roy Oswalt

4. Cole Hamels

5. Vance Worley

Closer: Brad Lidge

Setup: Ryan Madson

LOOGY: JC Romero

Middle Relief (LHP): Antonio Bastardo

Middle Relief (RHP): Danys Baez

Long Relief: Kyle Kendrick

C Carlos Ruiz

1B Ryan Howard

2B Chase Utley

3B Placido Polanco

SS Jimmy Rollins

LF Raul Ibanez

CF Shane Victorino

RF Ben Francisco

Bench:

C Brian Schneider

1B/OF Ross Gload

OF John Mayberry Jr.

IF Wilson Valdez

IF/OF Delwyn Young

IF/OF Michael Martinez

Many, many roster spots to be determined in Spring Training, though. My projected roster assumes that Joe Blanton will be traded, and also that Domonic Brown will be in AAA. The odds of both of those things happening are about 50/50. I do, however, think they will go with a 6 (maybe even 5?) man bullpen, which is almost unprecedented. But when you have a starting rotation that averages 7 innings per start, there is really no reason to waste roster spots on extra bullpen guys. I am still holding out hope that Chad Durbin signs, in which case they could look into releasing Danys Baez.

I also feel that Dom Brown is not ready to hit MLB left handed pitching (and his defense leaves much to be desired at this point), so I'd like to see him in AAA playing every day for now. The last thing I want is him in a platoon at the MLB level. If there is anything that will stun his development, it is that. He could very easily force his way onto the team with a great spring, though. I have thought all along that 2012, when Raul Ibanez is gone, is the most reasonable ETA for him.

As for the bench, I wouldn't be shocked if Michael Martinez doesn't make it, since it sounds like he is still very raw in many aspects of his game. But the Phillies love giving Rule 5 guys a shot, so I am penciling him in for now.

Also, as you could probably tell from the picture above, the Phillies are putting in a new video board. It is going to be SICK!!!

Sickkkk

The Phillies have partnered with Sony Electronics' System Solutions Group and Daktronics to dramatically enhance the fans viewing experience at Citizens Bank Park. The $10 million upgrade includes the installation of a massive, new Daktronics HD-15 video display and the latest in Sony HD production technology.

When completed, the new Phillies HD display will be the largest in the National League and among the largest in the world - measuring 76 feet high and 97 feet wide, and totaling 7,372 square feet of digital space.

Sounds like Chad Durbin will not be coming back. Kind of bittersweet. He's been very reliable for the past 3 years and still appears to be a solid pitcher, so it sucks in that regard. Supposedly he is looking for a multi year deal, so I am totally cool with the Phillies moving on. I could easily see Durbin turning into Chan Ho Park 2.0. The good news is that this almost certainly means Justin DeFratus will get a long look in spring training. I am incredibly excited about him.

Revising my wish-list Opening Day roster...

Rotation:

1. Roy Halladay

2. Cliff Lee

3. Roy Oswalt

4. Cole Hamels

5. Joe Blanton

Closer: Brad Lidge

Setup: Ryan Madson

LOOGY: JC Romero

Middle Relief (LHP): Antonio Bastardo

Middle Relief (RHP): Justin De Fratus

Long Relief: Kyle Kendrick

Lineup:

1. CF Shane Victorino

2. 2B Chase Utley

3. 3B Placido Polanco

4. 1B Ryan Howard

5. RF Domonic Brown

6. SS Jimmy Rollins

7. LF Raul Ibanez/Ben Francisco

8. C Carlos Ruiz

Bench:

C Brian Schneider

1B/OF Ross Gload

OF John Mayberry Jr.

IF Wilson Valdez

IF/OF Delwyn Young

I have become convinced that Domonic Brown needs to be the every day RFer. I have also become convinced that Joe Blanton needs to be on this team, unless somebody offers to take his entire contract or close to it (if the Yankees don't, I don't think anybody will). The other two changes I made...I have Raul Ibanez and Ben Francisco platooning in LF (I think this will almost certainly happen) and I have Justin De Fratus in the bullpen (bound to happen at some point, kid is filthy). This calls for Danys Baez being released, which I doubt happens. So either De Fratus starts in AAA or the Phillies carry an extra relief pitcher and one less bench guy (kind of pointless when 7 innings from the starter is almost guaranteed every night). I would love to see De Fratus on the team one way or the other though.

This winter, the Phillies have signed 2 of the top 4 overall picks from the 1997 draft (Matt Anderson and Jason Grilli) to minor league deals. Funny, since the Phillies had the #2 overall pick that year, and the gentleman they selected never played here ([expletive] you JD).

Ken Rosenthal is picking Cole Hamels to win the Cy Young.

I am in love with Cole, but I will be stunned if he has a better season than Halladay. But with that said, I might actually be more excited to see Cole than any of the other guys. He's had the cutter and a competent curve ball under his belt for a full season, and he supposedly looks awesome in workouts.

This spring is going to be a lot of fun. I think 22 of the 25 roster spots are basically set in stone, but the battle for the final few spots will be interesting. With the bullpen specifically. If everything goes as planned with the starting rotation this year, the middle relievers will probably get very little work, but I am incredibly excited regardless. Really stoked for some of these kids, specifically DeFratus, Schwimer, and Mathieson.

Today the Phillies claimed Brian Schlitter and DFA'd Andrew Carpenter.

Scouting report on Schlitter, Yankee fans? I suspect he is just another arm to stow away in AAA, but the Phillies are supposedly giving literally every arm a look for the bullpen this spring.

Haha I totally forgot he used to be in the Phillies organization. He was the player to be named later in the Scott Eyre trade 3 years ago.

Chad Durbin signed with the Indians, btw. He was pretty much ruled out as a Phillie, but yes, now it is official. Excited to see the kids like DeFratus, Schwimer, and Stutes get a long look in Spring Training.

Matt Anderson pitched yesterday afternoon. I did not see the game, but supposedly he was hitting mid-upper 90s with good command.

Tiny sample size, but it'd be a hell of a story if he makes a push for the final bullpen spot.
